Cops: Man dead after alleged DUI crash

A 54-year-old man died earlier today, struck and killed as he crossed a street in North Philly in broad daylight, police said.

At about 1:45 p.m., the victim was walking across Girard Avenue near 8th Street when he was hit by a white Chevrolet van, Officer Jillian Russell, a police spokeswoman, said.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene, Russell said. The driver of that van has been arrested, and faces DUI charges. His identity has not been released, pending the approval of those charges, Russell said.
