Cops: Man beaten in brutal W. Philly burglary

Investigators are scouring the city for a man who forced his way inside a home in West Philly early Tuesday and then brutally beat its occupant with a pair of bolt cutters.

The incident happened about 6:13 a.m. in the apartment above the Eagle's Corner Chinese restaurant on Spruce Street near 62nd, according to Lt. John Walker, of Southwest Detectives.

Security-camera footage from the building shows the suspect using a pair of bolt cutters to clip cables to the building's surveillance system before going into the apartment above the restaurant, Walker said.

Inside the apartment, the burglar found a 61-year-old Asian man, from whom he demanded money. When the man, who doesn't speak much English, had trouble understanding the command, the robber attacked him with the heavy equipment and a baseball bat, Walker said.

The suspect — described as a black man in his 20s, who wore a hooded Nike jacket and cargo pants — then returned to the restaurant, where he stole about $8,000 before fleeing. Police believe that the suspect lives in the area, given his familiarity with the business and its layout, Walker said.

Meanwhile, the victim suffered severe head wounds, including multiple fractures to his skill, as well as a few broken ribs, Walker said.

He remains at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in stable condition.
