Cops ID man gunned down in Juniata Park

The driver of a minivan that was killed in broad daylight was a man with a history of run-ins with the law, police said.

Cornelius Mines, 38, was shot dead Tuesday afternoon while driving his 2008 Honda Odyseey in Juniata Park, Officer Jillian Russell, a police spokeswoman, said.

An unidentified man opened fire on Mines as the van sped down I Street near Luzerne, striking it several times.

The vehicle crashed after striking another minivan. Mines was still slumped behind the wheel when police arrived, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene, police said.

He had been shot several times in his torso, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Mines, of Filmore Street near Rutland in Frankford, had a lengthy criminal record: He had been arrested 14 times for charges including robbery, assault and gun and drug violations.

There is no inofrmation available on a suspect, but investigators believe the shooting was sparked by an argument, Russell said.
