A Delaware woman driving with a leg cast roared onto a Wilmington sidewalk last night, hit and seriously injured a pedestrian and then fled.

Teresa Borcherdt, 41, was also under the influence of pain medication when she ran down Kenny B. Cooper, 35, of Wilmington, on a sidewalk on Route 52 north of Rising Sun Road at 4:50 p.m., Delaware State Police said. Witnesses alerted police which way she sped off, and Delaware State Police troopers found her parked in a 2006 Honda CRV in a lot at the University of Delaware's Wilmington campus off Route 52, police said.

Police say Borcherdt, of Newark, had been driving south on Route 52 when her car drifted and almost hit another vehicle, police said. She overcorrected her steering and swerved back through her lane, off the road and up onto the sidewalk where she hit Cooper, police said. Cooper was thrown 60 feet into a nearby grassy area; he is being treated at Christiana Hospital for injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.

Borcherdt was also treated at Christiana Hospital for minor injuries. She is now charged with vehicular assault, driving under the influence and multiple traffic offenses.
