Cops: Body found near Fairhill train tracks

The body of a man who had apparently been stabbed to death was found tonight in the Fairhill section of North Philly, police said.

The body of a man who had apparently been stabbed to death was found Wednesday in the Fairhill section of North Philly, police said.

Officers responding to reports of the corpse found a large bundle of fabric just before 6 p.m. underneath an overpass on Mascher Street near Tusculum, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

As they got close to the bundle, abandoned on an embankment near train tracks, the officers saw feet sticking out of one end. Then they noticed the stench of rotting flesh.

When workers from the Medical Examiner's Office arrived, they opened the bundle, a collection of tarps and blankets, Small said. At its center was an unidentified man who bore several stab wounds on his neck.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, but it was clear from the state of decomposition that he had been at the location for an extended period of time, Small said.

Homicide Detectives are investigating the case, and no information about where the man was stabbed or the nature of his killing is available.
