Cops: 2 men critical after separate late-night shootings

Two men are fighting for their lives at city hospitals tonight after two violent shootings, police said.

21st and Passyunk streets, South Philadelphia

In the first incident, police rushed a 19-year-old man to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after he'd been shot nine times in his groin and legs just before midnight, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

At the scene of the shooting, near a gas station, investigators found 14 shell casings from two handguns, remnants from an apparent gunbattle.

They also found two baggies of an unspecified narcotic, Small said, making a drug sale the potential motive of the attack.

Though critical at HUP, the victim is expected to survive his wounds, Small said.

Investigators are consulting footage from nearby surveillance cameras in hopes of finding information on a suspect.

About 20 minutes later, a 25-year-old man was shot in the chest, Small said.

There's not as much information available on this second shooting: the victim had already been transported to Albert Einstein Medical Center by a private vehicle by the time police arrived on the scene.

He's now in critical condition there with a single gunshot wound to his chest.

No information on a suspect or motive is available.
