This story has been updated.

A 10-year-old boy brought a gun to a West Philadelphia playground this afternoon and accidentally shot himself while playing with it, according to police.

Around 3 p.m., the 10-year-old was at a playground at 56th and Christian streets, playing not on the swings, but with the gun, when it discharged and hit him in his left thumb, police said.

He was taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was treated and released.

Police do not yet know how the child was able to obtain the firearm or why he brought it to the playground.

Authorities originally reported that the boy had been shot by an 11-year-old who brought a gun to the playground, but police said after further investigation, the victim had shot himself and the 11-year-old had nothing to do with the gun or the shooting.
