Cop critical after crash

Officer Christopher Simone suffered an array of injuries shortly after 1 a.m. this morning when another driver slammed into his cruiser near Broad and Spring Garden streets. Simone, who works in the 9th District, was responding to an assist officer call at Hahnemann University Hospital, where a 49-year-old man was brandishing a box cutter and struggling with cops, said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

The impact of the crash sent Simone's cruiser over a median, across the street and into an lightpole, Vanore said. The veteran cop was unconscious when medics arrived. He arrived at Hahnemann with broken ribs, a broken leg, head injuries and internal injuries as well. The driver and passenger of the other car suffered "non-life threatening injuries," Vanore said.

We'll be adding more on this later, of course.
