A 21-year-old woman was seriously injured when a horse-drawn carriage she was operating hit a car in Old City Friday afternoon, police and fire officials said.
The accident happened at about 3:45 p.m. on 3rd Street near Callowhill, said Officer Tanya Little, a police department spokeswoman.
The horse and carriage was stopped waiting for the traffic light to change on 3rd Street when the horse was suddenly startled and ran into oncoming traffic on Callowhill Street, Little said. The horse hit a Jeep, and the woman was flung onto the car’s windshield.
The unidentified woman was taken by medics to Hahnemann University Hospital. Information on the extent of her injuries was not immediately available. The horse was corralled about a block north on 3rd Street near Willow and was not injured. Police said the driver of the Jeep was also not injured in the accident.
Police in the Accident Investigation Division remained on the scene Friday evening.
