Stray bullet tears through house, hits sleeping woman in Frankford

A wild crime spree in Frankford early Friday morning culminated with a 61-year-old woman sleeping in her bed taking a stray bullet to the head and an alleged robber breaking into another house in an attempt to elude police, cops said.

A bullet meant for the victim of a robbery on Charles Street near Bridge just before 2 a.m. instead tore through the siding of a house and struck a woman in the head as she slept in a second-floor bedroom, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

When cops responded to the block, they discovered that the bullet -- which had been fired at a 28-year-old woman when she was held up by two men -- had somehow torn through siding beneath a window, drywall, a dresser in the older woman's room and her mattress before striking her, Small said.

Investigators said the bed was covered in the woman's blood, but that it appeared the bullet had slowed down enough by the time it hit her that it didn't hurt her as badly as it could have.

She was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in stable condition and was having her head X-rayed for skull fractures around 4 a.m., Small said.

The woman was in bed alone at the time, according to cops. A caretaker who was also in the house was not injured.

The men police say were responsible for the shooting had pistol-whipped their 28-year-old robbery victim just prior to firing the gun at her after she refused to give up her belongings, police said. Before that robbery, according to investigators, the thugs had gone on a "crime spree" in the area, robbing at least four people and possibly carjacking a fifth.

Immediately after the shooting, police found the two suspects a few blocks away on Hawthorne Street near Harrison, Small said. Cops chased them and caught one man, who Small said had a gun, money, cell phones and a purse all believed to have been stolen during the robberies in his possession.

The second alleged robber ran to a house on the next block of Hawthorne Street and broke in trying to elude police, Small said. He had no connection to the people who lived in the house, and cops arrested him there. Police said he'll face charges of burglary for the break-in in addition to the charges for the robbery and shooting.

Police are questioning two men, but no charges have been filed as of 5:15 p.m. Friday, said Officer Tanya Little, a police spokeswoman.

A 9mm full metal jacket will do that. Cheap surplus military ammo. It's on sale all over the place.

Why don't the cops go undercover and spread across the neighborhoods at night. When these creeps try to rob and shoot , at least then they can make an arrest !! Innocent civilians don't need to be out on these vicious streets after dark ! Let the police dress down, travel on foot and we will all feel safer

Gee, it must be frustrating to be faced with the bitter truth that the internet is really the only place you can vomit your racist drivel. How do you deal with that? Smack the wife around? Terrorize the kids? What?

Really? Don't tell that to the folks at my synagogue who are overwhelmingly Democratic and who generally live in pretty decent neighborhoods. Oh, you meant blacks, but you're just too much of a coward--even on the anonymous internet--to say that? Okay, fool.

Philly and Camden need the National Guard patrolling the streets.

The Nationl Guard are not cops. They be able to do very little to reduce crime.

When will these people stop? It's not surprising that people flee their neighborhoods once these people move in. They're almost like locusts that destroy everything everywhere they go.
