Police: 1-year-old critical after fall from moving SUV

This post has been updated.

A 1-year-old boy was in critical condition at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children Sunday afternoon after he fell out of a moving vehicle and was run over by a car, police said.

A corporal from the Accident Investigation Division gave this account: A Chevrolet SUV was traveling eastbound on Allegheny Avenue around noon and turned left to head north on Fox Street. A back door of the SUV somehow opened while the vehicle was moving, and the baby fell out and was then apparently run over by a 2009 Pontiac G6 that made a left behind the SUV.

The corporal said the driver of the SUV jumped out of the vehicle, picked up the injured child and drove him to Temple University Hospital. He was later transferred to St. Christopher's, where he remains in critical condition, police said. The driver of the Pontiac remained at the scene, spokeswoman Officer Jillian Russell said.

Police were still investigating the incident Sunday evening, and no arrests had been made, but police said charges could be filed by the District Attorney's office pending results of the investigation.
