Arrest made in gun slaying of aspiring boxer

Police have arrested a Southwest Philadelphia man for the shooting death earlier this month of Jahmeer Alphonso Jett, an aspiring boxer who was the son of a Philadelphia police officer.

Kevin Davis, 25, of 61st Street near Buist Avenue, was charged with murder and related offenses for gunning down Jett, 19, outside his home on Grays Avenue near 62nd in Southwest Philadelphia, at 5:50 p.m. on Jan. 17. Jett died 20 minutes later at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Investigators determined that a gunman approached Jett from behind and fired multiple shots into his back at point-blank range before running away.

Police listed the motive as retaliation but offered no further details.

As a member of the Upper Darby Boxing Gym, Jett traveled nationally competing in amateur boxing bouts. He ended his career with a 35-5 record, according to his obituary on Legacy.com. His father is a bicycle-patrol officer in Center City's 9th District, according to police sources. His funeral was this morning at the Memorial Baptist Church in Overbrook.
