2 wounded, one fatally, in S. Philly shooting

One man died and another is clinging to life tonight after a gunman shot up a quiet South Philly block, police said.

Neighbors on the block said the victims were two good men, one a hardworking SEPTA bus driver.

Just before 8 p.m., at least 26 shots rang out on a busy street corner, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

One man, 35, was hit once in the head and taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead minutes later.

The other victim, 56, was shot in his abdomen. He was also taken to Jefferson, where he remains in critical condition tonight.

It's unclear what motivated the shooting, but Small said that witnesses told police that the older victim, an off-duty SEPTA bus driver, was likely an innocent bystander.

Eric Devore, a longtime resident of Winton Street, wasn't home when the gunfire cut through the night.

But when he arrived home, he was greeted by a bevy of shell casings, remnants of the violence.

Devore identified the wounded man as Craig Washington, a neighbor.

Washington spends his days driving a SEPTA bus, Devore said, and his nights caring for his sick mother, who lives on the block.

Devore also knows the man killed, Wayne Jones, whom he said was a "good kid" who never got into any trouble.

"I've known Wayne all my life, knew him when he was in his mother's stomach," Devore said.

"We gotta stop the violence...enough already."

Witnesses, who are being interviewed by Homicide Detectives tonight, told police that a man in a brown jacket was seen fleeing the scene, Small said.
