Police: Man, 19, critical after shooting in Mayfair

POSTED: Friday, December 7, 2012, 1:05 AM

A 19-year-old man was in critical condition early Friday morning after police say he was shot in the back in the Northeast's Mayfair section.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said police were called to the area of Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard at 10:40 p.m. and found the victim in a driveway behind houses on Revere Street -- not far from the parking lot of the McDonald's at the corner -- suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.

The teen was taken to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital and listed in critical condition around 1 a.m. Friday, Small said.

The man shot was being held as a prisoner, according to police, after cops found a revolver in his pocket and a small bag of marijuana on him. He told police that he was shot during a robbery and described his assailants only as five men, one of whom wore a gray hooded sweatshirt. The shooters ran north on Revere Street, then split up and ran opposite directions on Guilford Street, according to the victim's account, Small said.

Police recovered a gun believed to be a BB or pellet gun at the scene, but also found a spent shell casing from a real handgun, Small said.

The shooting remained under investigation early Friday morning.

Used to be saying, "From welfare to Mayfair." It is true now with Section 8 and felons galore. A pity.

This section of Mayfair, is becoming the hotbed of drug activity!! Since the seizure of the stash house, not far from this location!!!

This is the second shooting in the same area in the last few months. When will our Representitives in Congress (Allison Schwartz) finally realize section 8 is killing working class neighborhoods?

@thorshuffle, don't blame your politician, blame the property owner who leases his property to section 8.

My grandparents live in Mayfair and I remember growing and loving to vivst that meighborhood and the pride they had in their home. Got to tell you now the place is essentially a mess. many of the residents don't have any pride in their homes and are chancing the one who do anyway and the their kids are complete scumbags. can you say Juniata Park. such a shame.

That neighborhood used to be a solid working class neighborhood with low crime and everybody worked. I never knew anyone on govt assistance. Then Section 8 housing was enacted and the projects were knocked down and the northeast was destroyed by the 47 per centers.

Just watch what is going on at the "Golden Arches" because that's the reason for all the criminal activity there!!!! The community group for the area should demand to stop the 24 hours service at McD's and you would see a 70% drop in crime for the area! SIMPLE AS THAT.

The vast majority of Mayfair (west of Frankford Avenue) is perfectly fine with exceptions like any community of 30,000 people. The most dangerous thing for the community is hysteria leading to everyone trying to leave at once (etc. Lawncrest in the late 1990s).

get out now before the various section 8 undesirables move in. otherwise it will be too late and you won't be able to give your house away
