A car plunged into the Schuylkill off of Kelly Drive late Tuesday afternoon, leaving a passenger hospitalized and a 31-year-old driver dead.

Police said the two men were in a 2000 Pontiac in a parking lot off Kelly Drive around 5 p.m. when the driver attempted to reverse, but accidentally switched to drive and accelerated, careening into the river. The crash prompted the temporary closure of Kelly Drive in both directions between the Strawberry Mansion Bridge and Fountain Green Drive, according to police. The 30-year-old passenger was quickly rescued -- with help from a high-school crew team that had been rowing on the river, according to investigators -- and taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

About an hour later, divers from the police Marine Unit pulled the driver, later identified as Devon Womack, of 26th Street near Huntingdon in North Philadelphia, from the river. He was taken to Hahnemann and pronounced dead there at 6:19 p.m., police said.
