Mother, son charged in drive-by shooting

Nothing says "I love you" like keeping a steady hand on the steering wheel so your son can pop off a few rounds into a rival family's SUV – with the victims' 10-week-old boy in the backseat.

Michelle Terry, 41, and her son, Dayvon Terry, 20, have been charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and related offenses for an alleged drive-by shooting Monday afternoon on Clover Lane in Upper Darby.

"Mom's driving the car and her son opens up on them with a semiautomatic," said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwoood, Sr. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Chitwood said the shooting apparently was part of an ongoing feud, but police aren't sure yet what caused the bad blood. He said Dayvon Terry, who was riding shotgun with a handgun, fired at least three shots – other witnesses say five or six – from his mother's Lincoln, one of which shattered the back window of the other family's Ford Explorer. The victims' baby was in the backseat. The bullet exited through the front windshield.

"It's a highly-populated residential area and these morons are shooting guns at 4 o'clock in the afternoon," Chitwood said. "That shot could have killed the kid."

"It's street violence at its worse," he added. "We can't let these bums take over our neighborhood."

The Terrys were apprehended near 69th Street and are being held at the Delaware County prison while awaiting their preliminary hearing.
