Janitor charged with punching 8-year-old

A teenage janitor at a Delaware County charter school has been charged with punching an 8-year-old student in the mouth.

A teenage janitor at a Delaware County charter school has been charged with punching an 8-year-old student in the mouth.

The incident, which occurred Monday at Chester Community Charter school in Chester Township, was caught on video surveillance, according to school officials.

It wasn't immediately clear what prompted Jorge Alvarado-Barbosa, 18, to hit the third grader. Police have charged Alvarado-Barbosa with aggravated and simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.

The boy's father told 6ABC that the school did not report the incident to police and sent his son home on the bus that day.

Update: In a written statement, Chester Community Charter School CEO Steven Lee said the "altercation" took place outside on the grounds of the school's West Campus on Bethel Road. He said Alvarado-Barbosa had only worked for the school for two months and that he has been terminated in light of the incident.

"Such behavior by teachers or employees is wholly unacceptable at Chester Community Charter School, no matter the severity," Lee wrote.

A teacher who was around when the altercation took place reported it to the principal, who "initiated a phone call, through the student's brother, to alert the children's father," Lee said.
