Four Loko inspires lovestruck teen

Senator Schumer does not drink Four Loko

Got a press release last night from Ridley Park police. A 14-year-old Secane kid was arrested after he allegedly threw rocks at windows of the Ridley Park Firehouse last weekend "in an attempt to get his girlfriend to come out of a dance being held at the firehouse."

I was about to delete the e-mail, which sounded like the opening scene of a bad coming-of-age flick from the mid-1980's (was she dancing with a 21st-century Ren McCormack? I don't know), until I read this bombshell: The lovestruck teenager told the arresting officer he was drinking ... Four Loko.

You mean this Four Loko? The Four Loko that is tearing apart the fabric of our society with its diabolical combination of caffeine, taurine, guarana and rotgut malt liquor?

This is the final straw. Clearly, this stuff needs to be banned immediately. Just look at what it made this kid do. If this was the pre-Four Loko era, when teens did keg stands of Natty Light in the woods, I'm sure this otherwise upstanding young man would have politely knocked on the firehouse door and inquired about his girlfriend.

Update: This is what happens when you try to ban something. Also, isn't anyone watching Boardwalk Empire? Remember Prohibition? If the government bans Four Loko, people are going to end up drinking homemade Bathtub Loko. At quadruple the price.

This stuff has three times the alcohol content of normal beer and enough caffeine to make your head practically spin right off. If the kid was simply drunk and not (allegedly) hyped up on what critics call 'crack in a can,' he might have behaved differently -- but it's impossible to say.

Actually, they call it "ruffies in a can," referring to a date rape drug because the sugar content plus the alcohol makes the drinker crash and pass out.

What's the difference between this and a Red Bull and Vodka? Or a Jack and Coke?

You are all nuts, there is nothing wrong with drinking this in moderation.

The problem with this energy/alcohol drink is that the person drinking it is "awake" (increased energy, etc) much longer and allows them to drink more of the product which is 12% alcohol. This leads to a higher blood alcohol content and increases the risk of alcohol poisoning.

I drink Stouts with a higher ABV but then again I am 32 and don't chug them like the kids do.

Or we could just teach young kids to drink correctly instead of hiding alcohol from them so they don't binge drink (which is the real problem).

Teaching the kids to do loko circles may be the answer.

This kid may not be wound too tight to begin with. In the Nineties, I worked with a guy who lived in the river town of Trainer which is not far from Ridley Park. He was having some kind of dispute with the Trainer Police Dept. so one night he decided to 'call them out' by firing a potato gun at the wall of their police station. He got their attention alright. This happened long before there was anything like "Four Loko" out there. So don't let the kid blame it on the chemicals. The firemen should have turned a hose on him.

Four Loko does not need to be prohibited - irresponsible people need to be prohibited from having kids. This country is going down hill, and it's because of rampant irresponsibility, and egregious finger pointing. I'm finishing my degree and getting the hell out of this country. I'll see you folks when the Euro is worth 6x the American dollar.

Oh, and Mr. Bender, great piece of literature you have here. HEH.

@Teufel Unlike Jacks and Coke, Red Bull and Vodka and Four Loko are a mix of a stimulant and a depressant. And apparently that's a stupid combination with Four Loko's high alcohol and caffeine content.
