Wyatt shines in Sixers scrimmage

ORLANDO – The 76ers' Fourth of July scrimmage was a good one for Khalif Wyatt.

The undrafted rookie free-agent guard out of Temple impressed the Sixers coaches with his "old man's game" on Wednesday night.

"He's been here before. That's what we say down south," said Sixers assistant Michael Curry, who's from Augusta, Ga. "He's very crafty, has the ability to score the basketball. I've been really impressed with what he's done with his body. He's gotten a lot leaner.

"But his basketball IQ is super high."

The slimmed-down 6-foot-4, 210-pounder is among the rookies and first-year players here on the Sixers' Orlando Pro Summer League team. The team opens league play at 9 a.m. Sunday against the Houston Rockets. The tourney ends on July 12.

"I'm just trying to get better every day," Wyatt said. "I'm learning a lot. They are throwing a lot of different stuff at you. But I'm just trying to pick it up as quick as I can, just play hard."

He is both the Big Five and Atlantic Ten Conference player of the year. Wyatt was also named honorable-mention all-American and was an all-district selection by both the USBWA and NABC.

The 22-year-old averaged 20.5 points and scored 30 or more points on seven occasions this season. He concluded his Temple career with back-to-back 31-point performances in the second and third round of the NCAA tournament.

Wyatt  said he can bring the effectiveness he displayed at Temple to the Sixers summer league squad.

"Just making plays, making shots, stuff like that," he said. "Just bring energy."

Wyatt is scheduled to play for the Dallas Mavericks in the Las Vegas Summer League from July 13-22.

Point guard Michael Carter-Williams, swingman Rodney Williams and power forward Arnett Moultrie also stood out during Wednesday's scrimmage.
