Video: Confusion in the 76ers' backcourt

The 76ers have played both Evan Turner and Jrue Holiday at point guard so far at the preseason. This has led to some confusion, especially given the expectations placed on Holiday for this year. Kate Fagan talks about the issue in this video chat with Cinesport's Noah Coslov.

Come on, Doug. Turner wasn't brought here to be a point guard. He looks lost out there. How could he possibly be in charge of running an offense?

Because he's not a true shooting guard or small forward. You have to look at what his real skill set is and this is what concerned me when he was talked about as the pick. He ran the offense at OSU. He's a facilitator of the offense, but he is limited physically. He is not an explosive guy, he's not one to get off the floor, he's got to be smart and savvy using his body to get his shot. He's not going to come around screens or off of picks and shoot the ball.

People are going to have to realize what kind of player Turner is, and most importantly, what he's not. It doesn't matter why he was brought to Philly, what matters is what his skill set is, what he excels at. It could take years to develop him into a true SG.

This is probably the first year I've ever really paid ANY attention to preseason Sixers action. In the past (since '79 or so?) I've maybe caught one or two preseason games and maybe read one or two articles. Now, for some reason, I'm reading more and vaguely interested, maybe because of the 24/7 sports news world, and I'd say it's totally diminishing returns the more attention I pay to it. Sure, they're soft inside. Sure, ET is getting some looks at point. Let's just not freak out like it's maybe mid-November on last year with Jordan showing no clue. ET will improve, my bet, especially since he's NOT YET PLAYED A SINGLE OFFICIAL PRO GAME. Eventually, he'll synch with Jrue. Hawes, too, is very young. He's not gonna block shots like Sammy but he's probably not gonna turn the ball over as much as Sammy either. Mainly, I'm just saying not to treat games 1 and 2 of the preseason like they're meaningful at all. Look for the good, folks. Lolk for the good, and maybe mention room for improvement, but don't dwell on it. Expectations for the team should be a low playoff seed at best. Not necessarily next year, but the year after that, especially, maybe the Sixers make a move toward the top echelon of the league. Right now, let's be happy with the potential improvements thanks to Collins, a maturing Jrue, a potentially special ET, a healthier Brand and Speights, a refreshed Thad and Lou, and a defensive-minded Dre I. (who will be fined for every three-point attempt, made or missed), not to mention a bunch of new faces and Kapono in a contract year.

Oh, the fabricated drama. Love your stuff, Kate, but would it not be a disservice to take a look at Turner at point now? It's Lou, Jrue or Evan. He needs the reps.

It's not a problem to experiment and mix and match with your guards. Doug put two point guards on the floor- his big back-court line-up and put the ball in Turners hands. It's ok if it didn't look smooth, Evan has to learn how to play the position and that isn't an easy thing. Remember that this was caused by Iduodala not playing the 2 spot. Collins could have gone with Jrue and Lou, but decided to go with Jrue and Evan. It's not even an issue.
