Trading Iguodala ...

POSTED: Thursday, December 31, 2009, 7:27 PM

So what's it going to take to get the Houston Rockets' Tracy McGrady and his $23 million expiring contract?

It's going to take a deal involving, as its main piece, 76ers swingman Andre Iguodala.

According to a source close to the situation, the Houston Rockets have said they would only consider shipping McGrady to Philly if the Sixers "knocked the Rockets over" with the amount of talent they included in the deal.

This source said the Rockets have made it clear they will not -- in any way -- consider trading McGrady to the Sixers for power forward Elton Brand ($14-15 million this year, 3 years left after this one) and center Samuel Dalembert ($12 million, one year left after this one). According to this source, the Sixers are trying very hard to unload Dalembert (not a surprise) and Brand (not a huge surprise, either).

The problem is not many NBA teams are willing to take on money right now. This source named only three NBA teams possibly willing (Houston, Dallas, and Cleveland).

According to this source, the Rockets have expressed interest in a deal involving Iguodala, but he must be paired with better, younger talent than Dalembert. (Read: a deal involving possibly Lou Williams, Thaddeus Young, Marreese Speights, etc.).

Again, the Rockets are willing to take on money, but it'd have to be a special package and a 3rd team might even need to be involved. This source said this would be the kind of deal where both teams needed approval from ownership because of the amount of money and players involved.

The source also said that the Rockets and Sixers have not talked in "more than a week", making a deal unlikely, but said any deal involving Iguodala "has a chance."

So there's the latest on the NBA's most talked about trading chip: Tracy McGrady.

The problem with the Sixers making a deal involving Iguodala and young talent is that they'd be getting rid of some good young guys and remain with Brand and Dalembert, which is sort of the opposite of the point of making such a trade.

Iggy's 25. At the very least he'll provide us another 10 decent years hopefully with better quality at the PF and C around him to make him a better player. T Mac could be great for us but only for Elton or Samuel and maybe a Willie Green. Personally I'd rather Elton than Sammy only because we need his defensive prowess. The line up could look: PG Lou Williams, SG Tracy McGrady, SF Andre Iguodala, PF Marreese Speights, C Samuel Dalembert. With Iverson, Young, Holiday, and the rest coming off the bench.

folks, just to let you know, moving just one contract is not going to do a thing for the sixers next summer. the payroll would be lower but they still would not have the cap space to be a player in free agency. They need to move at least $20 million to get $13 to $14 million in cap space. That's the type of first-year money with esclating max dollars that could get a player like Bosh, Wade, stoudamire, Joe Johnson or Brandon Roy to look at the Sixers. It's almost always about the money for players.

It all depends on what the sixers really want to do. It depends on the direction the sixers want to go in. If they want to make the playoffs this NBA season than they need to get on a serious winning streak. Right now with this present team, their not good enough, strong enoug, to make a serious winning streak for the playoffs. But if they trade Iguldola for McGrady, they will give themselves a better chance of making such a winning streak. When McGrady is healthy he's a clear upgrade from Iggy. He's not as athletic anymore, but skill level is better when healthy. A line up with Brand, Iverson, and McGrady gives yourself the best chance to get on the kind of winning streak you need to get this team into the playoffs. And it gives you the best chance to get out the first round in the playoffs. Their is no guarantee that this line up will get you into the playoffs of out of the first round, but it's all about putting the best team on the floor. The goal every year as a GM is to put the best team out on the floor. Brand, Iverson and McGrady is better than Brand, Iverson and Iguldola. Any real basketball mind can see that. But if the sixers want to build through the draft and be in the lottery every year, than stay the present course, make no trades, and continue to loose games. Atleast we will have that CANCER Iverson to entertain us with is corn rolls and tatoes while we loose games.

LOL @ thinking that McGrady can help this team advance out of the first round in the playoffs. He hasn't won a first round series throughout his career and there's a reason for that. Anyway, we'd be foolish to trade Iguodala in addition to other young talent for expiring contracts. Elton Brand needs to be included in any deal where we move Iguodala. If it means that we need to include a 3rd team to make salaries work (Denver, Cleveland) then so be it. Otherwise, Iguodala stays here. I also don't agree with the notion of moving Dalembert with Iguodala. Like him or not, he's serviceable and he'll be even more valuable next season when he's an expiring contract. We'd be better off waiting until 2011 to make any definitive moves. Just let the young guys develop and ride this trainwreck of a season out....If we are to correct an error, it would be to fire Eddie Jordan. He's singlehandedly ruined this team's chemistry/cohesion/defense and so much more.

Ok-- so lets blow up the team with a Rockets deal. Is this management? Weren't we trying--like just last week-- to develop this core group of players? Now one expiring contract comes on the scene and a week later we're trading one of the best of our youngest players? To be left with Brand and Dalembert? Wasn't Ed Stefanski supposed to the wise old owl that came to fix this situation? I don't see him saying "Ok-- let's start the whole process over"-- unless he's really not the smart manager we thought he was. Andre Igoudala is not a super star--but he's one of the few brighter spots in development group. Which-- as we saw from the LA game last night-- is still very much under development!

I would do it in a heartbeat. Iggie is a nice player not a cornerstone player. get McGrady and dump the contract next year. It's time.

Did papi make the call..I told you I had sources throughout the league...mark this baby down!Iggy is never going to be an All*Star and just because he plays 82 games a year that never has or will ever mean anything. He really never has gotten any better. If you watch us intently on a game by game basis I hate to say this but Brand is a stud and is our best player! The fact Scola is playing great has killed Brand being shipped to them! Our main problem is that Jordan's style doesn't fit with our talent core...Get rid of him(hire)Collins. Give Young 35 minutes and he will be a 20ppg scorer and an All*Star. Giving Speights to them seems a little shakey but to get it done I would do it as long as no one really doesn't want Brand!Like me and my cousin says when a team is 9-23 why the h*ll does it matter if we make a franchise shattering trade, we suck anyway. Our main problem is PT for the players and Jordan looks like a chicken with his head cut off when it comes to our rotation. Miller is being missed too, BIG TIME! What's bad is Iverson on one leg is better than Iggy. I wanted Iggy gone with Daly three years ago for Garnett, he's King's draft residue!

jnsjr...they would have to come within 10% of Tmac's contract. So they would have to trade at least $20 mil in salary. So they would have nice cap space this summer.

Trade Iggy and Lou Williams. Both are undersized at their positions. More playing time for Jrue and Speights.

include a #1 AND #2 pick. it does not get any younger than that. Let them do their own homework and scouting for a player. the price for that amount of cap space and player that could be re signed for half of iguodalas salary next year is worth the picks. iguodala for t mac str8t up! NO OTHER PLAYERS ON THE ROSTER! IF THEY WANT "YOUNG" PLAYERS GIVE THEM a 1ST ROUNDER AND A #2. PICK YOUR OWN DAMN TALENT! And sell it to them just like that. if they want more add a #1. NO MORE PLAYERS!
