The 76ers confirmed that General Manager Ed Stefanski and coach Tony DiLeo will meet sometime this afternoon to discuss DiLeo's future as head coach.

The meeting has been more than 10 days in the making and should be the team's first step towards deciding who will be the team's head coach going forward.
More to come ...

I've already stated my preference for a more discipline oriented coach, but consider this: Dalembert, Reggie, and Wille (assuming none can be unloaded before then) all come off the books in two years. That's over $26m in cap space in summer '11, or a whole lot of expiring contracts to trade at the start of the 2010 season. So does stefanski go for a long term coach going into 2009, knowing that the roster will look alot differnt over the next couple years, or does he do another stopgap deal and basically blow the thing up going into 2010? It will be interesting to see... the coaching choice will tell us alot.

The nuts and bolts of it is that what any of us think at this point is rather irrelevant!!!

I'm not a big Avery Johnson fan but Tony should assume a post in the front office. He is a nice guy and did a reasonable job, but this team needs a coach with experience (Avery isn't getting my vote).

$26 million expiring in two years is not that big a savings. By then, it might be a mediocre player as much as these guys make. I can't believe all the talk about local guys like Doug Collins and Fran Dunphy and others for coach. I'd rather DeLio frankly. If we can get an outsider to stress defense and coach these guys like Avery Johnson, and get Brand to buy into the system, we can improve by 10 games next year.

Just for the record, the cap is a little over $58m this year. It may go up or down a few %, but it will not move much, especially during a recession. $26m is darn near half of the total.
