As Gonzo mentioned this morning in his Page 2 column, and we mentioned here two days ago, 76ers point guard Andre Miller has a new agent. Miller has one season (at about $10 million) left on his current deal.

I spoke this morning to Miller's new agent, Andy Miller. I did not mention how similar his name was to his new client's, but I did try and get a feel for when we might know more about Andre Miller's future as a Sixer.

Andy Miller said he has, so far, only contacted Sixers General Manager Ed Stefanski to introduce himself as Andre's new agent. Miller -- the agent -- said the two parties have yet to discuss business except to agree they should sit down sometime soon and, well, discuss business.

There's a possibility that meeting could happen in State College during Training Camp (Sept. 30 - Oct. 5). But it also could be postponed until after the team returns.

Andy Miller said he has "no preconceived notions" about where this deal is going.

Speights at it "every day." Andy Miller (who will henceforth be the Miller mentioned) also represents Sixers' first-round pick Marreese Speights. Miller said Speights has been working out in Philly most of the summer. Speights, by all accounts, had a strong performance at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. I asked Miller how the time in Vegas helped his client.

"I know what it did for him," Miller said. "It gave him a whole new sense of confidence. He knows he belongs."

Miller said Speights is excited for camp, excited for the opportunity, even if Speights "doesn't know what to expect."

Miller also represents veteran Donyell Marshall, who signed with the Sixers at the end of the summer. Marshall is a native of Reading, PA. Miller said he spoke to Marshall yesterday and he expects his client to be back in Philly for the long haul in a day or so.

Royal Ivey, let's not forget. You'll remember -- goodness it seems like a long time ago now -- that Royal Ivey was the first free agent to sign after the Elton Brand deal. The 6-foot-4 Ivey signed on July 24. Of course, post-Ivey, the Sixers signed Kareem Rush, Lou Williams, Andre Iguodala, Theo Ratliff, Donyell Marshall ...

But back to Ivey. I spoke to his agent, Keith Glass, who said his client initially signed with the Sixers because he believed in where the organization was headed. (Glass said Ivey had two or three other NBA teams offering.) What does Ivey think now that the summer has ended and the dust settled?

"Royal knows all the additions have only made the team stronger," Glass said. "He's really encouraged with everything going on down there."

Glass said Ivey worked out five, six days a week this summer: lifting and playing. He also ran a free basketball camp in his hometown of Queens, N.Y. The camp, which Ivey held in the middle of August, had around a 100 kids.

Glass said Ivey worked out in Atlanta and Austin, Texas (Ivey's a former Longhorn).

"Royal called me last Thursday," Glass said. "He was in Philly looking at places ... He's very excited."

Smith update. Jason Smith, who tore his ACL in August, and had surgery last Wednesday, is just beginning the long rehab process. Smith, the Sixers first-round pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, tore the ligament in his left knee during an NBA-approved camp in Vegas.

Smith's agent, Marc Bartelstein, said his client is back in Philly, working with the Sixers' staff. (The surgery was performed in New York City.) Bartelstein said right now Smith's rehab consists of range-of-motion exercises as well as swelling reduction.

"It's a big hurdle getting that surgery done," Bartelstein said. "Mentally, he's great, because now everything he does is working toward recovery."

On a previous blog post, someone requested info on which training camps the Sixers' 'renounced contract' guys (Hill, Ollie, etc.) would be attending. Here's the deal: NBA teams must release complete training camp rosters by Media Day (the Sixers is Sept. 29), but most teams will be releasing rosters this week, usually by Wednesday.

-- Kate

Oh, and ... I know nobody cares about the University of Colorado -- you guys made that clear -- but chalk this up to continuity: The Buffs did, in fact, beat nationally-ranked West Virginia the other night. Although, like I said, I know nobody cares.

I can tell that you know your sports and that is always a welcome addition. You being a female sports reporter will always be a plus for me because my sister Claire was the first female reporter allowed in the locker rooms of professional sports opening the doors for everyone male or female to participate in a business that they love and excel at. She also wrote for the Bulletin (Whitey Ashburn always had her back), Hartford Currant, NYT and the Inq. GO GIRL! GO SIXERS!

What is the rush to sign Andre? He is great I agree, but the Sixers have added so many new moving parts why not wait to see how they come together. He's under contract, being paid well, and God forbid they just don't mesh he again could become a commodity come the trade deadline. I would think that patience would be justified, and then if things work out well re-sign him mid-season for 2 but no more than 3 years based solely on his age.

I think extending miller for a short deal is a good idea - as long as its short. Like 2-3 years, and for a little less than he's making now. Otherwise, i think you need to hold off and see how things shape up... My opinion notwithstanding, i bet he gets extended, whether this summer or after the season. Ed comes from NJ, where they kept Kidd around when he was older than Miller...I'm not saying Miller = Kidd, but i do think you can infer that Ed favors veteran point guards. Also make the point that Lou is still only a kid, and even if we think he is the next PG, there's no reason he cant wait another couple years. So baring any unexpected PG additions to the team, I'd say miller is the guy for a little while longer.

Can Speights play the role that Jason Smith played last year? Can he improved at the same pace that TY improved last year? Does he get 15 minutes a night?

kate: nice initial topics during this slow time prior to real activity. and i'm not sure why so many people worry about comments about your school-no problem from this perspective. one thing your predecessor did was actually join the discussion at various times, which may promote a more interactive exchange of ideas. nice to have the agents views but having some input (on or off the record) from mgt, opposing players, even reporters who covered some of these players would provide a spectrum of views. regarding miller: he was clearly our key player last year and remains in integral part in trying to blend the returning players and brand, speights and other new comers. while lou provides some instant offense, miller is really necessary to see how the rest of the team is meshing and is an extension of cheeks on the floor. the happier/more settled miller is, the better he may play (although ai2 was fine w/o a long term deal). with miller and brand, the time is now even though the future looks bright certain of the "young" core.

127sixer59 ... thanks for the comment. You're dead on about the various sources thing. I imagine as the season progresses getting those different views will come into play. Yeah, about the CU thing ... I think I'll keep adding my "Buffs" updates ... keeps a smile on my face, at least.

osuphan, Jason didn't really have a huge role, he was in to spell Sam, rebound, block, run when he could, and shoot that open J. And the reason that was his role was because there was no one else, he was our best option for spelling Sam (apologies to Shav, Amundson). But this time around, he has to compete with Theo for Jason's minutes, and Theo is better than Shav and Amundson. I guess it all depends on how well the two play in training camp. I think you can forget about PF, I think Mo has Brand, Evans and Thaddeus there. What do you think? What would you think of sending Speights to the D-Leaugue?

kate: glad to see you interacting. another source will be you since you will have access to practices as well as a vantage point from the press area during games. not only on our players but possible additions as when trade talks heat up (which usually are more hype than reality, although there are surprises). glad you'll persist in you buffalo updates but prepared for flames. ignore them. sixerzguy: interesting point about speights to the d-league. so much depends on how he actually plays during preseason and acclimates to the game. then the balance between having him practice against the rotation guys and under the coaches eyes or get playing time in real games. wonder if there's much data regarding success of either approach (like how the nfl/nfl-europe worked).
