Sixers to work out five big men Saturday, Teague Friday
John Mitchell, Inquirer Staff Writer
After the Sixers take a look at Kentucky point guard Marquis Teague on Friday at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Saturday will be dedicated to taking a look at guys that this draft is believed to be heavy-leaden with.
Big men.
Beginning Saturday morning, the Sixers will bring in 6-11 Arnett Moultrie (Mississippi State), 7-0 Tyler Zeller (North Carolina), 6-11 Perry Jones (Baylor), 6-10 John Henson (North Carolina) and 6-10 Andrew Nicholson (St. Bonaventure).
There is a higher probability that if the Sixers keep the 15th pick in the draft and don’t trade it that, of the players they have brought in, there eventual pick could come from this group.
Nobody for Teague to workout with...Denver is on him for the pick at 20...Moutrie and Henson are the finalists for the choice at 9, with the loser probably going to the Bucks at 12...Zeller needs more strength to defend in the low blocks, but runs like a deer and is a better player than Vucevic...Nicholson, a late bloomer like LaVoy, has been a riser on teams boards, and he's got the perimeter shooting ability DC craves, and can block shots with his length..Classy kid...Perry Jones has not impressed in workouts, but sure looks pretty in the layup lines....Where's Royce White?...Where's Myers Leonard?...Roddy pulling a slick one? bearsfriend
Another riveting JM article....none of these guys better become Sixers. The only one I have mild interest in at that spot is Moultrie. They need to draft Ross at 15 if he's there. This a crucial next few Sixers in this new Sixers era. How they handle this draft, Iggy trade, Brand decision, Lou/Hawes decisions all will go along way in determing if we have a shot at the title in 3 years. terpaholic- "..crucial next few weeks..."

Where's Kate Fagan when WE NEED her. Agree with terpaholic. dudega
How hard would it be to add stats or insight to this article. Lazy journalism. Thank god for the fans that post comments. ssaun
Thanks for the update/blogpost Mr. Mitchell. If not for you we wouldn't know who was coming here to workout. bout time they brought in some big men. Keep up the excellent work!! Rawkus
ha... professional writer... 'there' eventual pick sn11
I think perry jone is going to be the next KG IN THE NBA and the sixer should darft him if he is there at 15 jacksixer
Glad the Sixers supposed beat writer tweets stuff like "All hail the King"....we seriously can't get really basketball writers in this town? Christ, the Flyers have articles every few hrs... terpaholic
Well, at least we are finally bringing in some 1st rounders. I'd like to see Terrence Jones of KU 7mel11
@Jacksixer - Perry Jones is a taller version of Thad...he he run and jump, but doesn't really do anything exceptional. He's probably a 3 in the NBA (he lacks the physcial presence you want in a 4) but can't shoot that well. I'd much rather get someone that will excel at their position, i.e Ross as our 2. terpaholic
Bringing in Teague seems a bit unusual especially since he's working out alone.
As for the bigs, unless they trade up they have no shot at PJ3. With all of his talent I can't believe 14 teams are going to pass on him. As I watched KU's once promising big man, Cole Aldrich in garbage time last night I got a real bad feeling about Zeller. Can you name the one thing he's great at? I didn't think so. College bigs with decent stats don't always translate to the faster, more athletic pro game. If you're going to draft one he needs to be great at something; shooting (PJ3), shot blocking (Henson), post moves(Moutrie), athleticism (all of the above). Zeller is a guy who was good at a lot of things at the college level but wasn't great at any one thing. When you read the scouting reports on him they talk about his size, motor, work ethic, willingness to hustle up the court etc...this is a huge red flag to me! mtairy1
mtairy:Tyler Zeller is fundamentally sound and a decent player, but his best trait is that of running the floor with elite flat line speed..He is also a quick jumper...that being said, he is NOT long at all with an amazingly short 8'8" standing reach, and not a physical presence which will be exposed in some matchups. Teague is in solo, because someone "called out", something the secretive Sixers are not announcing (unlike other teams) as it doesn't look good...Rumor has it Royce White has a promise from the Celtics (#20,#21),although the Nuggets also like him a ton at #21....Another reason to not like the "late to the party" strategy employed by the Sixers in this process, as some guys (Waiters,White,Beal) have cancelled future workouts once they found their "promise"....Teague,who brings a "blur factor" on both sides of the court, but is not ready yet shootingwise ,represents along with Doron Lamb, intriguing picks in the event of a tradedown or acquisition in the 20-32 range.... bearsfriend
I personally don't want an intriguing player, I don't want a decent player, I don't want guys whose strength in running the floor, I don't want a guy who might become a good inside presence if he adds weight, I don't want a guy who might become a good shooter someday, I don't want athletes who bring little else to the table, I don't want a player with a disc problem. Everyone who follows this team knows there are TWO glaring weaknesses that absolutely need to be addressed for this team to move forward: one or more consistent long-range shooters who don't rely on slashing and overdribbling but can catch and shoot and a tough inside post-up presence. If the Sixers are going to rely on the draft to improve, rather than veterans, then try to add another first round pick and draft Ross and Moultrie or PJ3. I am tired of prospects and projects and athletes who can run the floor but cannot shoot. The Sixers are as bad a team in the half court set as there is in the Eastern Conference. chuckw
chuck:Forget about needs, and what the Sixers were last season...They need everything, because they're turning it upside down...There are questions regarding Lou,EB,Iggy, and Hawes(minimum)...so to just add to what we may not have doesn't solve the issues to the Sixers...I predict Michael Corleone,GF 1 moves...Over/under on personnel turnover stays at 6...IMHO....BTW, if you want the guy who can muscle LeBron, bound, set picks, pass from the high post, or run the break...that's Royce White, who has canceled his remaining workouts ...just hope he's not wearing shamrocks! bearsfriend
Again, it would all make sense if the Draft were after Free Agency! bearsfriend
Bear: my over/under is 4, as I still do not believe that Collins wants or feels he needs dramatic turnover going into a season with full practice time and having gotten these guys to buy into Curry's defensive schemes. I know you love White, but there has been NO indication that the Sixers are interested in him, as Cooney, if I remember correctly, told you. I am with Mtairy1, WHO dared to post today after going to that lame Phillies performance last night, ending their superb two-game winning streak. We want shooters from the draft, and a big or two from trade or free agency. chuckw- "There is a higher probability that if the Sixers keep the 15th pick in the draft and don’t trade it that, of the players they have brought in, there eventual pick could come from this group."
Wow! This is such poor writing. I too lament the departure of Kate Fagan and am disappointed at the lack of effort on the part of the staff in general. But Great Caesar's Ghost, as Perry White used to say, how do you account for "there" for "their"? And the composition is poor all-around.
This is an exciting time for the fans of the Sixers as the draft beckons. There should be a plethora of articles on the candidates to be drafted by Philadelphia especially in view of the new and progressive management.
You guys could do better. Get to work.
World - Couldn't agree with you more...Whether it's because of the Sixer's secrecy in this process (only one who seems to be quoted is Courtney Witte) as the brass plays "Spy Game", or the fact that Philly.com editors just underestimate the fan's interest in the direction of a team in the off-season...but,the coverage has been wanting.
bearsfriend - World - I agree completely! I would like to see much more analysis than we're currently seeing from Philly.COM. It would be nice to some a series of what / if articles. For example, we get to draft Leonard, so this means that the Sixers let Hawes walk. Or we draft Ross / Rivers so this points to the Sixers moving Iggy and then analyzing what kinds of scenarios this brings. Philly.com seriously underestimates the level of interest in this team.

chuck:they'll get shooters in the Draft, whether it's Ross at 15, D Lamb as a trade down,or Kim English/Hollis Thompson in the 2cnd Round...What i'm hoping is that tomorrow's workout simply is not a shooting contest, to see who makes the best pick and pop candidate. I'm in the physicality mode, as I believe the Sixers were inept on both sides of the ball against physical opponents, who also happen to be the best teams in the NBA, and the Sixers' biggest competition in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference...While I hope Ross is there at 15, that lack of girth still will need to be addressed in FA...Although each big coming in has certain qualities worthy (Henson-weakside shot blocking,rebounding...Moultrie-rebounding,low post verticality to finish, perimeter shooting,Nicholson-shotblocking,length,elite perimeter range,P Jones-physical specimen and varied talents yet to be realized,Zeller-most ready to play Day 1).........not one of them has a physical presence as a big. bearsfriend
chuck:I value the shooter as much as anyone...but if Ross is gone, who do you take?...Unless someone captivates DC Saturday, I think they'll go Harkless, or trade down...Again, everything depends on wheter Iggy is here or not. bearsfriend
@chuckw, yes I attended last night's loss but I have reliable alibis for the the other 37. I'm scheduled to attend another in late July hopefully I can rise above the Mendoza line.
@bearsfriend, I have read that Zeller's best trait is running the floor and scouts speak highly of his motor. Call me old fashioned but I want my big guy's best trait to be either a) scoring in the paint b) rebounding or c) defense/protecting the rim. Things like motor and running the floor are great add ons but shouldn't be the main attribute. It's like being set up with a girl who has a great personality. mtairy1
Agreed that we need a lot of things. And it's true that we don't know who will be gone and who will be coming in via trade/free agency. So -- assume we are going to trade Iggy for Gasol or Al Jefferson. Then we would focus more on guards (remember - the Sixers need shooters and a real PG too ... Jrue is a more of a 2 IMO) in the draft and in free agency. If they plan on signing Gerald Green and keeping Iggy, then we should expect to see them draft a big man or tw0 (and, hopefully, trading ET). Copper34- Agreed...Something not often mentioned lately is that if Lou departs, and Iggy does indeed get dealt...The "trusted" ball handler inventory goes from 4 to 2...Did DC use the multiple initiator system because of the plethora of players who needed the ball...or because he TRULY likes the mismatch advantages...IMO,versatility is very important regarding acquiring "the best players"....Love Gerald Green's offensive potential, but remeber, it's DC we're talking about...Defense is not a strength..I've got my eyes on a cheaper option that sill may be creeping into DC's dreams at night...Cartier Martin.

We miss you Kate! Mitchell's articles are empty of meaningful information or knowledgeable opinion. I come to this site to read the posts of the readers.
At pick 15, I hope they take the best player available; the palyer with biggest upside. THye need to get lucky in finding a superstar. Not a center. And in the second round pick up a back up PG and a PF or SG depending what they did in round 1. I like Kevin Murphy a SG/SF from Tenn Tech in round 2. He's a sniper and athletic xam14
Thank goodness for you knowledgeable commenters. I too am a bit disappointed with philly.com's apparent underestimation of the fan interest in the future of our 76'ers. I don't follow college hoops at all so I honestly get most if not all my meaningful insight from you guys. Thnaks again for the education on the eligible draftees. Mr Mel
This is pathetic! Nothing from the local beat writers except a string of LouWill opt out stories and a few paragraphs on scheduled workouts.
How about interviewing Thorn, Collins, Witte, DiLeo or even Aron twice a week? Or do something interesting like Kapadia did last week...report on what the various scouting reports are saying. You don't even need to be knowledgeable just google, copy and paste. Here's another idea,I read a piece by Chris Broussard where he polled over 50 execs and coaches...how about picking up the phone and calling a few GM's and getting their opinions on the Sixers draft, what they need, a good fit, how much LouWill or Hawes will command on the open market, what Sixer players are being shopped...Team execs love to give their opinions as long as it's anonymous. How about interviewing Iggy's agent or better yet David Falk who reps Turner and Brand. Here's another idea, how about contacting some of the Sixers players, find out where they are, what they're working on, who they're working out with, what their goals are in the off season. At this point I'd be happy with a Jody Meeks or Tony Battie update.
I'm going out and getting a drink, I'll probably have more inciteful discussions at the bar. Cole_World
Cole_World: outstanding post, summarizing what many of us are thinking and feeling. I thought that Michell had been canned and to all intents and purposes he might as well be gone and Cooney clearly went on vacation leading up to the draft and free agency period, a strange decision. DNL is useless with Dei Lynam, the in-house shill. Not everyone liked Kate Fagan, but at least she posted regularly on her blog, often answering the concerns of the posters. Have a drink or two on me. chuckw
bearsfriend: Myers leonard aint getting past the bucks at 12. at 15, the sixers need to draft, ross or moultrie. PERIOD!!! I absolutely hate zellar...royce is definitely gonna be a shamrock! johnGiam
johnGiam: the big question in whether the Sixers are going to try to add another first round pick and take Ross and a big, or move out of the first round entirely, trading the pick and Turner or Iguodala for veterans. I am not convinced they will stay at 15. chuckw
Hate to go in on a native west philadelphian but some of the posters are right. Most of the intrique from the draft comes from the leading up to it. And getting inside information and finding out who seems to be a good fit or not is usually how fans get pumped up for the upcoming season. Not giving any details of how workouts went or having any insight into who is being targeted just kills the excitement of the pick. The best reports are always going to be the fans.. But sometimes the report himself has to be a fan in order to keep conversations organic and relevent. More creativity or info would be satisfactory and must appreciated John. Peace. Zeru
Mitchell is a lost cause, IMO. I think the regular commentors should rotate and post their thougths/info on Deep Sixer. It couldn't be worse. I agree that there is no buzz surrounding this team right now, but I think maybe that lack of talk says alot. I wouldn't be surprised to see DC pull off some major moves between Thursday and 7/11 (FA signing day). He's keeping things under wraps for a reason. Of course I could be completely wrong and the entire team could be the same next season except for Brackens replaced by the 15th pick, but I'm expecting moves. Chris74
All the posters calling for royce white havent been reading the scouting report. He suffers from anxiety attacks and you want him to play for Collins? lol.. Micheal Jordan and Grant Hill couldnt even take more than 3 years of Collins and you want to put a thin skinned kid in there so he wonder why he is watching Willie Burton take his minutes? lol Priceless... why even draft a kid when you know you arent going to play him. Lets be real here. Who would Collins actually put on the floor more than 15 minutes in this class? Zeru

Even when there was nothing of special interest going on with the Sixers, Kate posted informative articles. She worked hard. Now, here we are with the future of the franchise on the line, and we get practically nothing. The best we've had for weeks are the opposite sides of a few worn coins: Why we should and shouldn't trade AI; why we should and shouldn't sign Chris Humphries; why we should and shouldn't amnesty Elton Brand. As has already been well put, there is a lot more to dig into at this point. Let's have some effort or a new "face." russpete
