Sixers to work out five big men Saturday, Teague Friday

POSTED: Thursday, June 21, 2012, 7:12 PM

After the Sixers take a look at Kentucky point guard Marquis Teague on Friday at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Saturday will be dedicated to taking a look at guys that this draft is believed to be heavy-leaden with.

Big men.

Beginning Saturday morning, the Sixers will bring in 6-11 Arnett Moultrie (Mississippi State), 7-0 Tyler Zeller (North Carolina), 6-11 Perry Jones (Baylor), 6-10 John Henson (North Carolina) and 6-10 Andrew Nicholson (St. Bonaventure).

There is a higher probability that if the Sixers keep the 15th pick in the draft and don’t trade it that, of the players they have brought in, there eventual pick could come from this group.

Nobody for Teague to workout with...Denver is on him for the pick at 20...Moutrie and Henson are the finalists for the choice at 9, with the loser probably going to the Bucks at 12...Zeller needs more strength to defend in the low blocks, but runs like a deer and is a better player than Vucevic...Nicholson, a late bloomer like LaVoy, has been a riser on teams boards, and he's got the perimeter shooting ability DC craves, and can block shots with his length..Classy kid...Perry Jones has not impressed in workouts, but sure looks pretty in the layup lines....Where's Royce White?...Where's Myers Leonard?...Roddy pulling a slick one?

Another riveting JM article....none of these guys better become Sixers. The only one I have mild interest in at that spot is Moultrie. They need to draft Ross at 15 if he's there. This a crucial next few Sixers in this new Sixers era. How they handle this draft, Iggy trade, Brand decision, Lou/Hawes decisions all will go along way in determing if we have a shot at the title in 3 years.

How hard would it be to add stats or insight to this article. Lazy journalism. Thank god for the fans that post comments.

Well, at least we are finally bringing in some 1st rounders. I'd like to see Terrence Jones of KU

@Jacksixer - Perry Jones is a taller version of Thad...he he run and jump, but doesn't really do anything exceptional. He's probably a 3 in the NBA (he lacks the physcial presence you want in a 4) but can't shoot that well. I'd much rather get someone that will excel at their position, i.e Ross as our 2.

Bringing in Teague seems a bit unusual especially since he's working out alone.
As for the bigs, unless they trade up they have no shot at PJ3. With all of his talent I can't believe 14 teams are going to pass on him. As I watched KU's once promising big man, Cole Aldrich in garbage time last night I got a real bad feeling about Zeller. Can you name the one thing he's great at? I didn't think so. College bigs with decent stats don't always translate to the faster, more athletic pro game. If you're going to draft one he needs to be great at something; shooting (PJ3), shot blocking (Henson), post moves(Moutrie), athleticism (all of the above). Zeller is a guy who was good at a lot of things at the college level but wasn't great at any one thing. When you read the scouting reports on him they talk about his size, motor, work ethic, willingness to hustle up the court etc...this is a huge red flag to me!

mtairy:Tyler Zeller is fundamentally sound and a decent player, but his best trait is that of running the floor with elite flat line speed..He is also a quick jumper...that being said, he is NOT long at all with an amazingly short 8'8" standing reach, and not a physical presence which will be exposed in some matchups. Teague is in solo, because someone "called out", something the secretive Sixers are not announcing (unlike other teams) as it doesn't look good...Rumor has it Royce White has a promise from the Celtics (#20,#21),although the Nuggets also like him a ton at #21....Another reason to not like the "late to the party" strategy employed by the Sixers in this process, as some guys (Waiters,White,Beal) have cancelled future workouts once they found their "promise"....Teague,who brings a "blur factor" on both sides of the court, but is not ready yet shootingwise ,represents along with Doron Lamb, intriguing picks in the event of a tradedown or acquisition in the 20-32 range....

I personally don't want an intriguing player, I don't want a decent player, I don't want guys whose strength in running the floor, I don't want a guy who might become a good inside presence if he adds weight, I don't want a guy who might become a good shooter someday, I don't want athletes who bring little else to the table, I don't want a player with a disc problem. Everyone who follows this team knows there are TWO glaring weaknesses that absolutely need to be addressed for this team to move forward: one or more consistent long-range shooters who don't rely on slashing and overdribbling but can catch and shoot and a tough inside post-up presence. If the Sixers are going to rely on the draft to improve, rather than veterans, then try to add another first round pick and draft Ross and Moultrie or PJ3. I am tired of prospects and projects and athletes who can run the floor but cannot shoot. The Sixers are as bad a team in the half court set as there is in the Eastern Conference.

chuck:Forget about needs, and what the Sixers were last season...They need everything, because they're turning it upside down...There are questions regarding Lou,EB,Iggy, and Hawes(minimum)...so to just add to what we may not have doesn't solve the issues to the Sixers...I predict Michael Corleone,GF 1 moves...Over/under on personnel turnover stays at 6...IMHO....BTW, if you want the guy who can muscle LeBron, bound, set picks, pass from the high post, or run the break...that's Royce White, who has canceled his remaining workouts ...just hope he's not wearing shamrocks!
