Sixers cut ties to Brand: will sign Nick Young

POSTED: Friday, July 6, 2012, 11:52 AM

The Sixers, not much of a player in free agency, will use the amnesty clause on forward Elton Brand, owed $18.2 million in the final year of his contract, and they reached agreement in principle to sign free-agent guard Nick Young to a one-year, $6 million deal, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

The amnesty clause allows the final year of Brand’s contract to come off of the Sixers’ salary cap. Teams below the salary cap will be permitted to bid for Brand’s services. The Sixers will pick up whatever the difference is that the team that signs Brand reaches an agreement with the player to pay him.

If no team picks Brand up, he will become an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team.

Young, 6-7, is an athletic player who should help the Sixers at the offensive end, where they struggled. He averaged 14 points last season with Washington and the Clippers.

Neither deal can be consummated until July  11.

Sixers chose Hawes and Nick Young over Brand and LouWill. It looks like size matters. They chose length. As of right now their smallest players are 6'4" Jrue Holiday and 6'6" Andre Iguodala

Agree that Dc has often gushed about Ryan Anderson...Dei Lynam has to wash the egg off her face off (well, for DNL, not necessarily the radio) as she has been deked out non stop by the brass in the past 3 weeks.

Amnesty was in the CBA; it had to be used in this case. Too big a contract for what Sixers got, a heralded signing at the time but it didn't work out production-wise. All the same, thanks EB.

Agree with bearsfriend DC and Nick Young will oil and water when it comes to playing defense but he is lights out offensively. That is the trade off. It will interesting to see what happens now. Would like to see EB back at a reduced cost for a POSITIVE/Mentor locker room presence. Like the MOVES. 76ers keep em' coming! We NEED a couple of veterans on this roster.

    Brand will be a Laker....

I see a sign and trade coming:

Thad Young for Ilysova....bottom line is the Bucks can up their offer of 5 yrs/$40M to beat anyone including the 76ers. Sign and trades seem to be the "sexy thing" right now this off season. Maybe we offer 4 years/$40M and in returns the bucks get Thad....remember the Bucks added Dalembert and Henson (1st round) as BIGS.

If this happens the 76ers would still have about $8-10M to spend....just a thought

Sign and trades seem to happen more often when the player is "restricted", but your thought process is on fire!...Maybe a "poison pill" does it!..Backload that baby.

Gonna miss EB. Didn't have much left in the tank, but gave all he had and is a class act. I think Lavoy (what a steal in the second round) can play most of his minutes.

@chuckw, changes aren't done. We only 10 players and 5 are bigs (Hawes, Vuc, Lavoy, Moutrie & Thad). 3 more slots to fill. Do we go with 2 more guards or just 1? Are we going to battle with these 5 bigs or do we add a Battie type player just in case? The next week or so should be interesting

Many options lay ahead...Banger like Ivan Johnson can be had cheaply, with the hawks not matching...Maybe a Calderon gets tagged, and he becomes a cheap jewel of a backup PG, which the Sixers need (door's open Zack!) with no Lou...Stretch 4's like Ersanity and Ryan Anderson have to have DC's eye...Over/under for turnover remains at 6.

Major surprises just when we thought this FO lacked the capacity to surprise. I never thought they would amnesty Brand. Hope he lands on a good team. I might have preferred someone other than Nick Young, but I'm happy that the Sixers pursued someone of consequence and managed to get him for a surprisingly affordable short term. (Parenthetically, if the Sixers resigned Sam Young our team would have all three NBA Youngs)

Now, how much of the cap space do they use this year? I hope they don't blow a bunch of it on Lou and that the Young signing significantly diminished the chance of that. I agree with a poster above that someone like Young is the right kind of signing because he shoots without needing to dominate the ball.
Somehow they should acquire an affordable backup point guard.

Sorry to see Elton go this year, but this recent news if finally some reason to hope for this franchise.
