Sixers cut ties to Brand: will sign Nick Young
John Mitchell, Inquirer Staff Writer
The Sixers, not much of a player in free agency, will use the amnesty clause on forward Elton Brand, owed $18.2 million in the final year of his contract, and they reached agreement in principle to sign free-agent guard Nick Young to a one-year, $6 million deal, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
The amnesty clause allows the final year of Brand’s contract to come off of the Sixers’ salary cap. Teams below the salary cap will be permitted to bid for Brand’s services. The Sixers will pick up whatever the difference is that the team that signs Brand reaches an agreement with the player to pay him.
If no team picks Brand up, he will become an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team.
Young, 6-7, is an athletic player who should help the Sixers at the offensive end, where they struggled. He averaged 14 points last season with Washington and the Clippers.
Neither deal can be consummated until July 11.
BREAKING NEWS!!!! sixers just announce that they will not be bringing Lou williams back!!!
Nick Young IN...elton and Lou out!!..which leaves us with about 15 million in cap space.
not bringing back Lou, leads me to believe that Nick is being looked at more as bench fire power, instead of a potential starter! johnGiam
Its great to see we have a "pulse"....The 76ers will throw the remaining $12.2M at Ilysova, Humphries or Anderson....although I would be surprised if Orlando didn't match Anderson.
I like Nick Young for one year $6M....your probably over paying a little but I love the fact that with the one year deal Nick Young will be forced to play his best so that he can become a hot comodity in next years FA class as well......and we don't lock up big money long term.
Real solid move.....and the amnesty of Brand was needed for this team to move forward....our young BIGS need to play NOW! bbrady25
Brand earned my respect. Hopefully he can clear the waiting period and come back. combocancer1975
Nick Young is a knucklehead. Period. He doesn't play defense...has an inconsistent shot, and flat out thinks he's better than what he really is. Other than that, it's a great signing. The Sixers lack direction...you draft Harkless...who is essentially a younger version of Thaddeus Young. Moultrie...well...the jury is still out. And Spencer Hawes is a soft, overrated, stiff. Wow, so it means that a player will determine how much $$$ he will make by playing hard and showing the team his value to them---this is unheard of...this will threaten the NBA as we now know it--an alarming trend for sure....LOL Idaho76erfan
sixers just announced that Lou williams will not return! johnGiam- Thanks to EB, a true professional who never complained about his role even when our previous coach (for whom someone on here had a great nickname that I can't recall) yanked him around like he was a rookie or shot vet. I really don't know what to make of this, other than it's a short-term solution. He puts up a lot of shots per game (more than 12 while averaging about about 24 minutes for his career) and shoots it at an OK percentage (43%, 38% 3-pt). Looks like a sideways move to me...bear, I have to say I'd rather have LouWill
Can the FLYERS use the AMNESTY clause on A FEW of their TERRIBLE contracts....PRONGER....BRYZ....WHY are the FLYERS getting a FREE PASS!!!! 40 years without a parade..Spending $ like the phillies Wizmix
I hope that by not brining back Lou Williams doesn't mean Jodie Meeks is on this team again next year. PSU_Chuck

Josh Smith and his expiring contract to Atlanta for Iggy? Can Thorn sell it? syddan26
Really feel like the rest of the division forced the Sixers hand. Combined with the cap, it was too much pressure not to tag EB. It also makes me almost certain another trade is comming. Now that this move was made, I do not believe they are stuffing the cash for next year. Can I get a 4 yrs $45m for Ersanity. I can't believe how much he fits what DC is trying to do. Remember Ace Ventura? LIKE A GLOVE!!! Independent_1
Wow! my apologies to all concerned, as I was certain they were not going to make significant changes, including amnesty for Brand. If the tea leaves are correct, they are about to make a MAJOR move to counter the Nets. BTW: huge fan of Nick Young!! Sixers finally looking to shooters with length. Goodbye Jodie Meeks as well. DC is not messing around. Dust is beginning to settle. Where are you JBP? chuckw- good day chuck! finally we get some ACTION!!!
Excited to see Nick Young with a good coach for the 1st time.
Die Lynam is on the radio as we speak. Lou is officially gone. she is saying that the brand move, means that the sixers are confident that thad and lavoy can start...but she thinks that the other shoe is about to drop!
Imo the only real question is: are we DWIGHT HUNTING? or are we going the Illya, Anderson or Humphries route? johnGiam
Listen. No EXCUSES NOW!~!! go get me ILLYASOVA!!! Have him agree to a deal by the end of the day.
Ideally they do a sign n trade for Iggy, so that we can get some of his cap off the books to!
we would go into next offseason with a nice and young TEAM without the glaring holes that it had last summer, and it allows us to become MAJOR players in free agency next year.
NO excuse, get ILlya to ageree on a contract TODAY!!!! johnGiam
