Sammy D rumors

POSTED: Tuesday, November 17, 2009, 12:11 PM

* A couple of additions ... after a few more phone calls, it looks like this deal is not near happening. So rest on it. It certainly won't be happening today. But don't think Dalembert is content being a Sixer. His party is actively looking for a new home for the Sixers' center.

Also, I give a 50-50 chance that tomorrow night's starting lineup against the Charlotte Bobcats will be Lou Williams, Andre Iguodala, Rodney Carney, Thaddeus Young, and Samuel Dalembert. If you missed yesterday's post on this issue, scroll down.

And here's the earlier post:

Woke up this morning to this tidbit from Marc Stein at ESPN's TrueHoop:

"There is some hope, according to NBA front-office sources, for a three-way deal that is currently in the exploratory-discussion phase.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Philadelphia 76ers and Sacramento Kings, in considering the feasibility of a Samuel Dalembert-for-Kenny Thomas swap, have discussed expanding that concept with Boston by trying to draw in the Celtics on a potential three-way deal that would land Andres Nocioni with the Celts.

Sources further stressed over the past 48 hours that this should be classified as an ongoing conversation as the teams involved decide how much they like what’s on the table.

But the full deal as it stands, if it eventually gets that far, would send Nocioni to Boston, Kenny Thomas, Tony Allen and Brian Scalabrine to Philadelphia and Dalembert and J.R. Giddens to Sacramento."

Now there are a lot of qualifiers in that post: "exploratory-discussion phase", "if it eventually gets that far," and "considering the feasibility of" ...

We know that Sixers General Manager Ed Stefanski has been looking to trade Dalembert since before the trade deadline last season. I'm currently sitting at 76ers practice waiting for the curtain to open. Will certainly post more information as soon as it's gathered, but for now, having made a few calls, I think this is something to sit tight on. Spoke with Dalembert's agent Marc Cornstein and he said it's no secret the Sixers have called Sacramento -- they've called most teams in the league -- just as Dalembert's people have also explored trade possibilities. He said he'll learn more throughout the day but that right now three-team trades are "very tricky" and he's not expecting anything imminent.

If you want to follow for more immediate information, you can follow Deep Sixer on Twitter, click here: Deep Sixer.

Here's this bit from "Sactown Royalty," the blog of the Sacramento Bee:

Player '09-10 '10-11 '11-12 '12-13
Dalembert $12M $12.9M -- --
Nocioni $7.5M $6.9M $6.7M $7.5M*
Thomas $8.8M -- -- --

"The Kings would save a solid $4 million this season, give or take as roughly 10 percent of the season's salary has already been paid out. Next season, the Kings would have $46 million in payroll on the books instead of $40 million, and would be out of the running for a major free agent chase, barring something unexpected with the salary cap. The Kings would gain $6.7 million in space in 2011-12  (putting the team at $34 million in commitments without accounting for Spencer Hawes's extension) as the then-31 Nocioni would no longer be on the books. Nocioni's 2012-13 salary is a team option, which is unlikely to be picked up by any team, unless Bueno Aires grabs an expansion club and Dorothy Nocioni is the owner. So basically, the Kings would save roughly $4 million this season, spend an extra $6 million next season and save $6.7 million in '11-12. A net savings of roughly $4.5 million over three seasons."

I see all of the comments about the out of control NBA contracts; plenty of overpaid stiff (Sam Dal, Gortat, Brad Miller, E. Dampier, and the list goes on). In today's NBA, you trade your overpaid dud, for another team's overpaid dud and you pray he can contribute to your team. There are very few good players. This salary glut is going to kill the league (see the NHL). Don't tell me the NBA is not the NHL...they do not have regular season games on broadcast TV until Dec, the arenas are half-full, the games are not worth watching until the playoffs, sorry players are paid overpaid for their value, the very good players are scarce, and the league is mostly comprised of a single ethnicity. The NBA is a distant 5th (maybe 6th behind college b-ball) in popularity (NFL, College football, NASCAR, MLB and then the NBA). David Stern better get this in check before it is too late to save the league.

Wilt, Moses, and now Sam The Sham. Why do the Sixers always trade their franchise centers? I swear I'll never watch another Sixers game if The Sham is traded.

Sammy for Kenny Thomas? When was the last time 2 stiffs who were given over blown contracts by the same GM (infamous Billy King) were traded for each other. That has to be a distinction only the Sixers can accomplish.

Zeru77: Stefanski is not trying to trade Dalembert to make fans forget the Brand deal; Dalembert asked to be traded and has made it clear he is not happy here because of reduced minutes this year and last. I don't think, like many other posters, that he is awful, but nor do I think he is the force you describe. He makes too many stupid early fouls, has inconsistent footwork, is too light to bang with the big boys like Dwight Howard, and has little or no offensive game, which is acceptable with a Ben Wallace, but he is no Ben Wallace. Apparently, Stefanski made every effort to move him, and no team showed any real interest, in part because he is not good enough and in part because of his 15 percent trade kicker. He is being paid an all-star salary and must be moved once Speights returns, so the Sixers have a chance to sign an all-star free agent, if they can also move either Brand or Iguodala for expiring contracts and clear major cap space. The Brand signing appears to be a serious mistake, admittedly, as Jordan himself seems to acknowledge; more likely, Iguodala would be better trade bait. He is a fine player, probably not an all-star and the Sixers really need a top-flight all-star to put fans into the seats. And I don't mean the return of the other AI.

As much as I like to see it, let Slammin Sammy D's contract run out. Why pay Scalabrine for two extra years? The only players with legitimate upside on this team are Young, Speights, and Holliday. That being said, they won't be good for a few years anyway. May as well let Dalembert come off the books. Let Brand be a good leader but ineffective player. Just start letting their FAs go and gaining lottery picks. Look at what Portland did. That should be the model for every GM in the league.
