The 76ers are interviewing Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach David Vanterpool on Monday, Yahoo! Sports in reporting.

A source close to Vanterpool confirmed Friday’s report that the Sixers had requested permission to interview the 40-year-old.

Portland hired the Daytona Beach, Fla. native last summer after he spent two seasons as an Oklahoma City Thunder scout.

He recently coached Portland's NBA summer league team in Las Vegas. Vanterpool is credited with the development of Blazers point guard Damian Lillard, the NBA rookie of the year.

The Sixers have been without a head coach since Doug Collins resigned April 18.

Citing coaching insiders, however, ESPN reported two weeks ago that the job will go to San Antonio Spurs assistant Brett Brown or Sixers assistant Michael Curry.

NBA assistants Jay Larranaga (Boston Celtics), Ed Pinckney (Chicago Bulls), Adrian Griffin (Bulls), Quin Snyder (Atlanta Hawks), Kenny Atkinson (Hawks), David Fizdale (Miami Heat), Melvin Hunt (Denver Nuggets), Chris Finch (Houston Rockets) and Kelvin Sampson (Rockets) have also been mentioned as candidates.
