The 76ers are indeed in talks with the Denver Nuggets about a potential trade for Carmelo Anthony, an NBA source confirmed, although another source cautioned that there are likely 20-plus NBA teams inquiring about Anthony's availability and nothing was imminent regarding this trade. A third questioned Anthony's desire to play in Philadelphia -- Anthony has made it clear he'll only play for a handful of teams, with Philly not on the list.

The second source said the next step in this negotiation is Denver's and that all negotiations have gone quiet today; this coming week will show where the Nuggets are headed with Anthony.

Bottom line: Yes, the Sixers are talking with Denver, but they are one of a number of teams pitching proposals Denver's way.

Although the peripheral pieces of this potential trade remain unknown, one Western Conference source said the heart of the Sixers' offer would revolve around Iguodala, whom the Nuggets have always been very high on.

Last week we reported here that the Sixers would make a call to Denver, but in recent days the Sixers' potential role in a trade for the Nuggets' superstar was overshadowed by a developing trade involving, among other teams, the New Jersey Nets and Charlotte Bobcats. As that trade for Anthony has been held up, and is threatening to fall apart, a trade involving the Sixers has been given a little life.

    Thanks Kate!
Personally I'd much rather play a facilitator role,as I don't think Melo wants to be here, I'd rather just get a few young pieces for the future and some $ flexibility.

Would love to get Favors instead. This kid has major potential and bigs with his size are hard to find.

Agree with Foshan. However it would appear that Favors to Philly is pretty unlikely. We'll see though, eh? ...

Carmelo's not coming to Philly and anyone saying otherwise should be guilty of criminal negligence for spreading blatant falsehoods. That said, if we can get in on the deal as a facilitator and it helps us in anyway, then I'm all for it.

All signs point to Denver reaching out again to Anthony to stay; otherwise the deal with the Nets has been reached. I doubt he would ever wish to sign an extension with the 76ers, almost certainly preferring the megabucks he would receive from the new Russian owner of the Nets and the megabucks from advertisers on Madison Avenue. Of course, for those posters who do not like Iguodala, this would be the opportunity to move him, keep Anthony with his expiring contract and make a deal moving Anthony at the trade deadline. Of course, the wildcard is the potential lockout of the 2011 season.

No GM on the planet made Iguodala an offer as a free agent....and not one GM on the planet will take on his contract. He is totally untradeable no matter how many times this author and others say otherwise.

I'm a big Doug Collins fan and I spent many enjoyable years working for the Sixers but . . . I live in South Florida now and realistically the NBA's immediate future is going to be centered in South Beach. The best the Sixers can hope for is respectablity.

melo is a self-centered dim-witted path to nowhere for whoever picks him up, his career legacy will be comparable to a less injury-prone tmac

This is a very possible trade. Rod Thorn is a guy who got Jason Kidd and Vince Carter to the nets, when they were in there prime. Rod Thorn is one of the most repected people in the NBA. When he call everyone listens.

I'd prefer Iggy for his defense. Carmelo would take too many shots and not let ET develop, though he'd be great for Jrue to feed.
