NBA: neither optimism nor pessimism

The NBA and the NBA Player's Association met Wednesday for approximately 12 hours in New York.

The end result? They've agreed to continue meeting on Thursday at noon.

"We've agreed to meet tomorrow at noon," said NBA commissioner David Stern. "I would not read into this optimism or pessimism."

Both sides were tight lipped about the specific discussions today, but both sides were quite clear that there was still a lot of work to be done.

"We're not failing, and we're not succeeding," Stern said. "We're just there."

The NBA, Stern and deputy commissioner Adam Silver, spoke first. The union, president Derek Fisher and chief Billy Hunter, spoke second. Fisher started by saying significant progress was not made.

When asked if he sensed the NBA's willingness to offer flexibility on some of the system issues (mid-level exception, sign-and-trade, etc.), Fisher said he couldn't characterize the NBA's potential flexibility, but Fisher did say that if the owners were showing the proper flexibility, there would already be a deal.

Bottom line? More of the same. Another meeting. Another press conference without significant progress. Another day of the 2011-12 season gone.

"We're going to meet again tomorrow to give it our best effort, but we don't know if it will be enough," Fisher said.
