Kwame Brown joins Sixers
The Sixers on Friday signed free agent center Kwame Brown to a two-year, $6 million deal, according to a report that first appeared on Yahoo Sports.
Brown, 6-11, will get the opportunity to start if he can beat out Spencer Hawes, last season’s starter. Hawes and the Sixers have reached agreement on a two-year, $13 million deal.
Last season, Brown appeared in just nine games with Golden State before suffering a torn pectoral muscle in his chest. He has season-ending surgery in January.
Brown was drafted by the Washington Wizards with the first pick in the 2001 draft. He was the first player to be selected out of high school with the top pick in the draft. Current Sixers coach Doug Collins was his first NBA coach.
In 11 pro seasons, Brown averaged 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. The Sixers are his seventh pro team.
Why are you so bad at writing? "He has season-ending surgery in January." Did anyone read this before posting? Also Doug has said he is moving Hawes to the 4.

Career stiff. dasher
WOW!!! I am sure he will make the sixers real winners. Another loser! oneway
super cheap and short contract..no real down side...DC coached him with the Wizards, maybe he gets more out of him. Can't hurt. terpaholic
It's obvious to me, and I'm not an NBA aficionado, that it's not about this year. Why all the complaining? This is what the NBA is. get short contracts, dump salary, then throw money at a big name FA. What's so hard to understand? road515
What Shawn Bradley wasn't available?
Did the Sixers lose Charles Shackleford's number?
While we're at it let's sign Chris Washburn and trade to get Greg Oden.... IrishJoe

Short term, this team is going to take a serious step back. Lou and Elton were good in the playoffs. They are really counting on Turner and Holiday taking the next step - which won't happen. They are what they are. With that said, the Lou Williams + Elton for Young, Wright, Brown, is an extremely cap friendly set of moves. Managment realizes that in order to ever win anything they need to clean house and sign a stud if one ever hits the market. So, short term it's going to be painful for us, but long term, there is hope. sore richard- I agree almost completely. I think the Sixers could end up getting a bit more out of Jrue and Evan could be really good if they ever use him to his strengths. Regardless, the team will probably regress and it needs to. The only long-term hope of them contending is having Evan or Jrue become second-tier stars while one of their young bigs also gets there. For that to happen, they need to give those guys important minutes playing together. If nobody steps up, they fail miserably and get a good pick/have cap space to rebuild. This isn't tanking, its taking intelligent risks. Nonetheless, Kwame is not the answer because he takes minutes away from our young bigs without contributing enough to make it worthwhile unless somebody gets traded.
