With the 17th pick in the NBA Draft, the 76ers selected Jrue Holiday, a point guard from UCLA.

Most mock drafts had Holiday as a Top 10 selection, but he dropped. Sixers General Manager Ed Stefanski had said all along they would take the highest rated player left on the board. And they did. Holiday -- who played only one season at UCLA and averaged 8.5 points a game -- is considered more of a project than UNC's Ty Lawson.

Here's the running copy of tonight's first 15 picks.

The NBA Draft is underway at Madison Square Garden. And each pick influences who the 76ers might draft at the 17th spot. Here's what we know so far:

1.) Blake Griffin, Los Angeles Clippers: This was expected. Not much more to write.

2.) Hasheem Thabeet, Memphis Grizzlies: Again, this was the guy everyone had penciled in as the Grizzlies' choice, and his selection does not rock the boat.

3.) James Harden, Oklahoma City: A little bit of a surprise at the 3 spot as most folks thought Ricky Rubio would be taken at this spot, but Rubio and Harden would both be gone in the Top 5-6 anyway.

4.) Tyreke Evans, Sacramento: Rubio is slipping, which is surprising, because I think most folks had Rubio at 3 or 4.

5.) Ricky Rubio, Minnesota: So here lands Rubio, probably a spot or two later than expected, but still gone in the Top 5.

So there are the Top 5, really no shocking surprises, and nothing that changes anything the Sixers might do. Just keeping it updated. Check back to this same blog after the 10th pick because I'll just be updating within this blog.

6.) Johnny Flynn, Minnesota: So Flynn worked his way up this Draft. At the start there was speculation he might be available when the Sixers picked, but quickly he worked into the Top 10. And now has worked his way past Stephen Curry in the draft order.

7.) Stephen Curry, Golden State: I think there are a lot of upset Knicks fans in NY, as most folks thought Curry would be their selection at the 8th spot. Still nobody taken that was thought to -- possibly -- slip.

8.) Jordan Hill, New York: So the Knicks take a forward. Reaction seem luke warm in MSG, but still nobody taken that has been in the Sixers core group of guys.

9.) DeMar DeRozan, Toronto: The Raptors always do some wacky stuff on Draft Day, but this was seems like a solid young guy they're taking from USC. So it seems there are plenty of the Sixers guys still on the board: Jeff Teague, Gerald Henderson, Ty Lawson, Eric Maynor, Terrence Williams, Wayne Ellington ... almost enough to get them to their pick with one of their guys still on the board ...

10.) Brandon Jennings, Milwaukee: We could say this impacts the Sixers a little bit because there was some speculation that his stock was dropping and very well could be available at the 17th, leading to discussion if the Sixers would take him even without seeing him in a workout. But he's gone, taking away that speculation. Six picks left before the Sixers.

11.) Terrence Williams, New Jersey Nets: There we go, off the board a guy you would think was in the Sixers' core group. But Williams being gone means little to the Sixers as Williams skills overlapped far too much with the some of the players in their lineup. And his outside shooting is suspect.

12.) Gerald Henderson, Charlotte: Henderson is off the board, too. Although there was only a slim chance that Henderson would be on the board at the 17th spot, there was still an outside chance.

13.) Tyler Hansbrough, Indiana: Well, I think most thought Hansbrough wouldn't be taken until late in the first round, but the Pacers took a flyer on his NBA ability.

14.) Earl Clark, Phoenix: Big guy from Louisville was not on the Sixers radar.

15.) Austin Daye, Detroit: Forward from Gonzaga also wasn't somone the Sixers were supposedly interested in.

Plenty of the Sixers guys still remain on the board. Here are the relevant guys still on the board with only 1 pick before the Sixers: Ty Lawson, Eric Maynor, Jeff Teague, Wayne Ellington ...And, of course, Ohio State center B.J. Mullens ...

We'll be blogging about the Sixers pick as soon as it happens ...

This is the second best PG prospect behind Flynn in my opinion. HOliday has good size and atheticism. He will be a nice player in another 2 years. Mark my words he will be nice

Stupid gamble. We take the one guy whose stock plummeted in the draft. Maynor was the educated guess, and we blew it. Our floor IQ is s**t, and it's worse than that without Miller. Maynor was the most experienced, most NBA-ready PG out there at 17, and he was the most capable to run the kind of offense that wins championships.

I have to question taking a guy who is considered a project when they need a PG who can come in and contribute immediately. I hope fast Eddie has a plan in place.

It's f***ing ridiculous! No offense, a project, not going to run a team for at least a few years. Phew! Young, Williams, Speights, Sammy. And now this kid. Brains-wise, we're now worse than a bag of hammers.

Why take Lawson, after all he only won a national championship. I hate the Sixers almost as much as I hate Zumoff

The last thing this team needs in another project. Maynor's ready for the NBA.

With all due respect, they need immediate help to do what? To win what? This is how you build a team. Draft players with upside. How many stars were seniors? none.

...Ahhhh, Philly fans are amazing. We grabbed the guy who was ranked between 7th and 9th OVERALL in the draft... with the #17 pick... and you guys are complaining. Un-freaking-believable.

none of these kids were going to come in and run the team anyway. Maynor is smart, but he's a 6 foot 160 lb. kid who played in the CAA - he'd take a few years to develop into a player also. even lawson would have needed a year or so to figure out the nba game. face it, drafting at 17 in a weak draft isn't going to yield you a day one starting PG - why not take the guy with the highest ceiling?

Hate to break the news, but Lawson is a backup. Mateen Cleaves, Kalid El Amin lead team teams the titles too. Means nothing.

I would have much rather seen the 76ers draft Ty Lawson, who is a proven floor leader who would have been a perfect fit for this team, learning the NBA game behind Miller or starting right away. I don't understand taking Holiday, regardless of how high it was rated. He sounds too much like Lou Williams.

I guess I can't say whether Holiday will eventually prove to be a wise pick, but it makes me wonder why so many teams let a "Top Ten pick" slide to #17. I agree that the Sixers need a player who can contribute quality minutes NOW, not in 2-3 years. Hopefully the Sixers "brains" know what they are doing.

WOW. They sixers had everybody that they wanted available at 17. I understand Blair more than Holiday. Projects...Lou Williams, Iggy, Sammy they turned out awesome, not. Ty Lawson and Eric Maynor would have been flawless at 17. The Sixers dissapoint me every year with their picks. This goes back to larry hughes instead of paul pierce.

Quote of the night, on ESPN, from Dick Vitale "guys that get drafted who averaged 8 points in college get coaches fired!"

Would you rather have the 6-4 200 pound pg who played on a high level, or the 6-2 160 pound pg who played division in a very weak division? How is Maynor going to defend nba pgs? he can't he's too small, and he's not quick enough, and he's not even that great of a shooter, so why do people think he's such a stud. Lawson is good he'll probably be the same type of pg as Jameer Nelson, except there's been questions about his work ethic and weight throughout his time at UNC.

thank god dmanns is here to talk sense into everyone. let's face it, the sixers are not going to win anything the next few years. as the core of iggy, speights, young, holiday develop, and if we manage to get anything out of brand, we may have a scary team. young and speights were both project picks with upside and I think most reasonable people are okay with how they are coming along so far. Because fewer people contribute in basketball than any other team sport, a "one dollar" player is so much more valuable than four "quarters." lawson/maynor were not going to push us over the edge...i agree with going on potential and ceiling to hopefully help us escape low lottery/1st round playoff exit purgatory, which is what we are in for the foreseeable future.

I AM SO ANGRY!!!!! I WAITED 16 LONG PICKS AND I GOT HYPED WHEN NO ONE PICKED TY LAWSON! HERE I AM, WITH THE BELIEF THAT THE SIXERS WILL MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR ONCE...I THOUGHT WE WOULD GET OUR GUY....AND THE PHILADELPHIA 76ERS SELECT....JRUE HOLIDAY...WHAT!!! NOT TY LAWSON!!!!! ARE YOU SMOKING DOG FOOD!!!!!!!

Philly fans are idiotic. Holiday was the best available PG and a steal at #17.
