Holiday's agent, Sixers meet
John Mitchell, Inquirer Staff Writer
Tony Dutt, the agent for Jrue Holiday, was in Wells Fargo Center on Monday night doing his due-diligence for his client, who is in line for a possible contract extension before the start of the season.
I don’t know how the discussions went or how they are progressing, but I don’t think that Holiday, who has said that he wants to be a “max-contract player,” is going to see a deal get done before the Oct. 31 deadline.
I don’t have a firm idea of what is going to happen, but I have talked with enough people around the league to think that they are not going to get a deal done and Holiday will reach next summer as a restricted free agent. If that is the case, the Sixers will be in position to offer Holiday a larger contract than any other team.
As a restricted free agent, the Sixers could sign Holiday to a five-year deal. Other teams can sign him for four years.
Holiday was the 17th overall pick in the 2009 draft and that class is loaded with guards like Stephen Curry, Brandon Jennings and Ty Lawson, all looking for substantial extensions but unlikely to get them.
However, the one benefit that Holiday has over all of the aforementioned guys is the addition of a big man in Andrew Bynum who can potentially do wonders for Holiday’s game and his stats. Holiday should be getting more open looks at the basket when the big man draws the double team. I also think that this is a season in which Holiday can become an assists monster. Holiday averaged 6.5 assists, a career high, during the 2010-11 season. Why can’t he hand out at least two more (minimum) now with the weapons the Sixers have added?
Stay tuned. There is always the chance that something may get done. However, I don’t think it will.
If Holiday really wants a max extension, you're d### right nothing is going to get done, because he doesn't deserve that. oyoyer
lol- how is this a story? are you even talking to anyone w/the sixers about this or the agent himself? how does knowing an agent is in town lead to the article being titled "Holiday's agent, Sixers meet". How do you even know they met? my wife was at the sixers game last night. now i can't tell you how the conversation went or even if there was a conversation at all but through my sources around the league, i just don't think she'll be offered a contract to play for the sixers this year. now who from philly.com do i speak with about getting paid for that scoop of information? 76ers in 2076
no extension now please. lets wait until we know what player he really is. bill poore
If we hurry, we can sign him prematurely for too much money!!! Mortimer G Fingenfinderstein III
ty lawson is said to be getting 4 yrs, 44mil...if they can extend jrue to 4yrs 36-42 I would seriously consider signbing it right now. they wont give up on jrue regardless of how he plays this year, but Im really starting to feel that he will have a breakout season as both a scorer and general...mite be wise to try and get a deal down now! johnGiam
The signing of Holiday now signals a winking of Eyes between the Bynum Reps and the Organization. It would have been impossible to max both Bynum and Holiday. This way we can sign Holiday to a 4 or 5 year deal with some flexibility while also allowing us to sign Bynum to a max 5 or 6 year contract. Good move all around. Does anyone actually think Holiday isn't worth that risk at what? 22 years old?.......... Ink him now kerryt
agree that this kid is major league talented, but uncertain as to whether he will find his niche. playing against williams the other night was a major reality test. is jrue going to be a an upper echelon point guard? can the team figure out a combo scheme to bring out the best in him? definitely hope so. rzzzzz
I tell you what. This signals a major doctrinal shift from the old management to now a first strike policy. Who would have thought the Sixers would be considered power players in the NBA. It used to be only teams like the Knicks or Lakers or Celtics did things like this. Keep this up and Philly will become the new NBA free agent Magnet. Kudos to the Ownership kerryt
exactly kerry! the guy is 22yrs old. lets pretend that he doesnt have a breakout season this year, they still gonna have to re-sign him. Jrue is a good kid, who wants it, with a tremendous upside. no matter what happens this year they wont give up on him, so really whats the point in not signing him now? if anything he will be worth more at the end of this season. im really starting to feel like he has a breakout season. if that happens, he will cost much more then he does today. If he said he would sign today for 44mil...I probably do it. But ideally, i get that down t the 36-41 range, and I would sign him today in heartbeat johnGiam
I agree John. But truth to tell, if Holiday replicated the exact stats from last year @ what, 13.5 ppg we could be playing for a championship ( conference or NBA ). To me, for this team to make great strides, the onious is on Turner. With Holiday, ( improvement or not ) you know what your getting. A gritty, tough, talented kid with great upside who will fight Tooth and Nail. With Turner, you see the glimpses but want to see him do it over the course of a season. I personally believe he will show up and we will be back to this same conversation next year about his extension. My Gut tells me the Sixers did well getting them both kerryt
yeah we see it the same way. I think this will be Jrue's breakout year, and I expect Turner to make strides and be a major part of our team THIS year...but I think next year will be the year that Turner breaks thru into the bigtime. I believe in both kids. You know what turner doesnt get credit for? He is starting to really run well off the ball, backdoor cuts, thru screens. Im really starting to like his movement...and if jrue turns into the surgical general I expect him to be, then evans ability to move without the ball will be paramount...and Im starting to really like what I see. I believe in both kids johnGiam
Give him the full 6 year deal $70mil. Lock it down. Kid's still improving. gubbers97
If we extend him now and he keeps going the way he is going we might save soem $ if we don't give him the max. If we're gonna give him the max we might as well wait and see what other teams are willing to pay and match it as he is restricted. Only thing you have to worry about there is a team willing to bend the rules ala giving Lin the backloaded contract he has forcing New York to let him go. If that happens we'd be screwed so Dileo and company has to play it smart here. You have the advantage right now because Jrue might be willing to settle for less to have a better team or he might force his agent's hand by saying he wants to stay in Philly. That 5th year will be key. Give him slightly more than any other team can give him total but less on a per-year basis.
Gubbers97 - you must have missed where he can only get 5 years from the 76ers and only 4 from other teams. I'd say go 5 years $50 million. He deserves 2nd best pay on the team and Thad gets $9 million so $10 million might not be a stretch. I'd dump some contracts to bring back Nick Young and Wright next summer. Kwame Brown is a definate candidate and Turner might be another if he doesn't step up this season. JRich or Hawes also but I'm starting to feel the Hawes from early last season is back after last night's game. JRich is on the downside of his career if we could find a taker for his $6 million next summer it would be worth it to help bring back Nick Young & Wright. joecooler2u
Billy the King or Ed Stiffanski would have given Holidaze the max already. Those guys are fools. wait until the end of the year. Tyrone Biggums
joecools: to extend him now, you can only give him 4 years. Once the season ends, you can give him 5 and other teams can only offer 4. I agree with what you are saying completely, but to tell you the truth, I dont think you even need to sign him to the max right now to get the deal done. when a guy like ty lawson, same draft class, same level (some say slighly higher level then jrue) is only going to sign 4yrs 44mil, then i have to imagine that Jrue's deal will be very close, and to tell you the truth, I believe in Jrue. We gave thad 40, I have no problem droppin 40 on a young kid like Jrue, but only because of the type of guy that he is. He wants to be great. This isnt a job for him, its a passion. Good kid, liustens, works hard, stable relationship will prob be married soon. In todays pro sports, when you have a young kid as talented as jrue, but with this type of charechter...its a no brainer. Sign him 4yrs $40mil right now, and lets save ourselves some money. johnGiam
John I think Jrue would be happy with the security if they can compromise on salary. I hope we don't have to give him the max for the simple fact that I want a better team. I'd like to be able to bring back Nick Young and Dorell Wright and if we pay Jrue too much you can forget that (unless if you dump salary like Kwame Brown and maybe JRich/Hawes). I kinda think we overpaid for Thad because Jrue should be getting that kind of money. I absolutely agree 4 years $40 million sounds great right now. joecooler2u
yeah I see it the same way you do. I honestly dont think the maxc is an issue. that wasa just jrue's agent firing the first shot at negotiations. number 1 rule in negotiations: START HIGH n bargain your way down. I think 40-44 that lawson is said to be getting is enough to extend jrue! I ont think that there is any way that we let Nick and Dorrell leave town at the end of the season. like, you I hve to believe that Jrue will take the 40million dollar security blanket now! johnGiam
