Bynum deal is done
John Mitchell, Inquirer Staff Writer
It’s official.
Earlier today the Sixers announced that the team’s acquisition of Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum and guard Jason Richardson of the Orlando Magic – key parts in the four-team mega deal that sent Dwight Howard to the Lakers – was ratified by the league.
"We are very excited to welcome Andrew Bynum, one of the league's best, young centers, and Jason Richardson, a proven, respected veteran, to the Philadelphia 76ers," said Managing Owner Josh Harris. "As we stated from the outset, our ownership group is committed to exploring every option available to us in order to improve our team. This trade is the culmination of a very active off-season, one that we believe positions the Sixers for success this season and for many years to come."
The cost to the Sixers was sending long-time forward Andre Iguodala to the Denver Nuggets, and center Nik Vucevic and rookie forward Maurice Harkless to the Magic along with a protected first-round pick.
In seven seasons, the 24-year-old has appeared in 392 games with 300 starts, averaging 11.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.60 blocks in 26.0 minutes per game while shooting 56.6% from the floor. He was the 10th overall pick by the Lakers in the 2005 draft.
Richardson (6-6, 225) was originally the fifth overall pick by Golden State in the 2001 draft.
The 11-year veteran has appeared in 805 games with 794 starts, averaging 17.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.17 steals in 34.6 minutes per game while shooting 44.1% from the floor and 37.2% from 3-point range.
Sorry to see Moe Harkless leave as a valuable chip to Orlando, but the excitement meter has just swung back high for the Sixers after an odd first half to the offseason..,Good luck to Iggy in Denver, where the uptempo game will befit his talents...Sixers basketball just got more physical...How about that. bearsfriend- Let there be MRI machines under each basket ... a special section for Registered Nurses singing The Beatles "I Want You" ... each home game having a Special Guest Concussion Specialist ...
Let Red Cross Stretcher Night cause league-wide fear and trembling.

I think Harkless was too much. Denver should have contributed more to the trade. We gave up our allstar, last year's first round pick and a future one. That should have been enough. Particularly if we gave up another first rounder to Miami. Zeru- Interesting argument, but you're looking at it as if it's "paying your fair share"...If Denver doesn't get into this deal, it DOESN'T happen, as Orlando did not want Bynum...it was rumored that the Magic liked Harkless (several mock drafts at #19)pre-draft, so it makes sense that they'd take cheap talent that's young...Both Harrington and Afflalo are solid players, but they don't necessarily make sense in Orlando... I thought the Rockets had the best young assets to satisfy the Magic. their loss is our gain.
bearsfriend
For all of that we should have gotten Dwight Howard ourselves. Zeru
Does anyone else think this is a high price to pay for what they got? Having said that, later Ig. PhillySubsMac
I can't wait to see Doug Collins work his magic with the new talent and the returning players. Things are most certainly going to be a lot more interesting with this bunch in place and it's good to be young with up-side. I've got a feeling DC gets great production from a talented young team that understands he's the boss and he knows what he's doing. The new ownership is to be commended for agressively pursuing the return of the franchise to playoff relevance. Good Job!! bentlip
Not to mention LA (of course) got arguably still the best player in the league and now he and Kobe will win another title or two. Is the NBA that rigged, that only LA, Miami or Boston can get the dominant players in the league year after year? PhillySubsMac
If Andrew Bynum signs a contract it probably is a good deal. If he leaves we have given away last years and this years first rounder picks and two additional(the one for Moltrie) first round picks. Let's all hope he wants to stay. rolan01us
I dont agree with giving up Harkless.. Why should we have to pay for Howard when we got Bynum. Zeru
Now the question is what will the starting lineup be I think it will look something like this:
1. Jrue
2. ET
3. Wright
4. Hawes
5. Bynum
Although I think Thad is the better player and will get more minutes than Wright but it makes more sense to have a shooter (Wright) in at the same time as Turner since Turner and Thad are both slashers. rohara- Exhibition season for the Sixers is going to mean ALOT more for the Sixers as combinations and scenarios will play out...Sure DC's computer is on overload as we chat...Team still needs to evolve as leaders need to emerge...style of play is going to be different for existing Sixers...ballhandling responsibilities are cut in half from last season (it's Jrue and ET's show in that department)..where as "pick and pop" was the core play in the halfcourt last season, it'll be much more "picka nd roll" with Bynum, with entry passes down low, and kick out passes to the catch and shoot additions...Hawes' high post passing should be enabled by this spacing, and cutters should have more room to roam.
bearsfriend
The Sixers gave up too much in the deal to become only a slightly better team. Dragon13- ??? This trade moved us from an 8 seed to a top 4 team in the east. If we actually get offensive production this year, then this trade will take us far!
iceman7634 - To be determined, as the Eastern Conference I believe did improve...But with one deal, the Sixers' odds to win it all went from 40 to 1...to 25 to 1 immediately.
bearsfriend - So, your tellin me there's a chance!
mariord
Huh...this is the second time we've traded an AI to Denever. 3-hit shutout
I've been watching Harkless in the summer league and I'm not very impressed. I'm just glad that the Sixers are at least trying to get better. If Bynum signs, we have a chance to be contenders in 2 to 3 years. Corey301- Not fair, as he played but one game, then 6 minutes of another with a hip flexor that he came to Rookie Camp with...that being said, he's a project at this level, albeit a talented one....Regarding Bynum, I agree that he'll give the Sixers a dimension only a few other teams int he NBA will have, and physicality that they are in dire need of.
bearsfriend
Can't wait 2 see what the 76ers get 4 Bynum at the trade deadline...I'm only half Kidding with that comment...If they are a middling team with the Heat & C's/Knicks/etc looking REAL good, & Bynum doesn't seem to want to sign an extension by than, they could get a King's ransom 4 Him if He is Healthy at that point in the Season. Again, if they don't think they R a lock for the ECF (progress from last season), than trade Him. DaHurricane
We paid a high price, but not too high. You have to give up something to get something. Before the trade, the Sixers were a nice, hustling club, but they probably would've never been better than a #6 seed without a big man. We now a have a chance to be a real factor. nmlawyer
Dragon13-If we gave up too much then we wouldn't be a better team. HTBNM#
With Bynum on the floor we can let Thad start at the 4 and dominate other 4's with his quickness. Zeru
What's the Sixers draft record with first rd picks? I'm referring to those complaining about Harkless. With their track record, I predict Harkless will be another Larry Hughes and at best another Evan Turner. I do agree that Harkless was the tipping point of giving up more than we should but the Sixers will have plenty of chances to get players the caliber of those they gave up. It's been 30 years exactly since they got a bona fide dominant big man not even entering his prime. For that, it was worth overpaying a bit. Alycia Layn

This is all about dumping Iggy's contract for one that's expiring. 14.7m this year, 15.9 in 2013-14. With that off the books they might be able to make a move in free agency next year, while putting people in the seats this year. When was the last time anyone was talking Sixer's basketball in August? Smart trade. DrumsAndBeer
Love this but ONLY if Bynum signs here!!! Gave away a lot for a short term player if he does not sign and that was a big roll of the dice. Hope it works out.
I would like Turner in the 4 and not at guard. How about Richardson and Jrue at G with Turner, Bynum, and wright? connorjr- To think Evan Turner can play the 4 is hilarious.... Lebron James, Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Pau Gasol, Kevin Garnett, Carlos Boozer, Amare Stoudamire, Deker Favors, Paul Milsap, Kevin Love are 4's- Evan Turner could not defend any of them.
Iceberg23
Harkless may not be any better than Thad Young...because he CANT SHOOT! Nikola V. isnt going to be a force anytime soon...and it was time to get rid of Iggy..we still have Wright and Nick Y, and Thad. Laboy plays great D. As well as the whole team. If Holiday, Turner, and Bynum ball out; ECF isnt out of question. GREAT TRADE BEAT THE HEAT iceman7634
I don't get giving up an allstar in Iggy, last years # 1 pick (Vucevik), this years # 1 (Harkless) and another protected # 1 pick for Bynam?? He's good, but he's no Dwight Howard. And if he doesn't sign, it's a disaster. kchaz
This was a steal for the 76ers. Hatless weighed about 110lbs but had "growth plates " off the charts! Iggy was nice but you get the same thing every year from him, he maxed out. They needed a new look and got it. Miami has no middle, only team in east w a center is NY w Chandler. Could be interesting.... 76sixers- Actually, Harkless' frame is what impresses people...Wide shoulders, thin waist, and VERY long arms. The type of athlete football coach's drool over when recruiting...That's what Rod was referring to, but IMO he won't get thick, but he'll be yoked...Greyhound.

Very. Good. Trade. AHopp
I dont think we over paid for Bynum. I feel like we put the extra cherries on the deal for the Lakers to get Howard. Instead of the Lakers having to part with Gasol in the deal they made us give up our near future for a center that hasnt even promised to stay here. Getting rid of Iggy because you want to make room for Harkless was great. But getting rid of Iggy and Harkless was sort of redundant. Zeru- How dumb are you? We gave up Iggy, a marshmellow plodder in Vucevic, a lottery protected pick and a 19 yr old project that was being considered for the D League. We got a 24 yr old all-star legitimate low post20/10 monster and an athletic, professional starter with range. You try so hard to appear smarter than the room you only make yourself look dumb.
OG - From last year's team that walked off the floor against Boston, we gave up Andre Iguodala (2 yrs left @ $30 mil) and got Bynum (1 yr left @ 16 mil). That's the bottom line. Even if Bynum does walk, which is not likely (would you leave $20mil on the table that only the Sixers can offer??) that frees up Iggy's $16mil next season to sign someone else. You can harp over Harkless if you want, but we still got a 1st rounder in Moultrie. As to Vucevic who couldn't get on the floor last year and the future 1st rounder which will be somewhere around No. 20, I'm not seeing how anyone could possibly call that too much when you're returning one of the game's top centers. We finally get the big that everyone has clamored for and yet people are legitimately up in arms over losing Vucefrigginvic and one of the half-dozen wing players who wasn't going to see the floor anyway??
- 95 % of Sixers' fans will be happy about this deal, as it put the Sixers back in the conversation in the city, and around the NBA...Still a few holes to plug, and a monster center to impress...to keep him...Available cap space is nice, but this deal is all about a dominant big man playing here, and hopefully staying here...have not heard any Sixers' fan sorry Nik vucevic is moving on.

Obviously Harkless has been a trade bait from day one. Sixers is a playoff team and Harkless is harmless at age 19. I do not like Sixers give out a future first round pick. But the bottom line is Sixers is a better team now and there is nobody in the Eastern conference could play one on one against Bynum. Bynum will make his teammates better players, i.e. Hawes, ET. There are 70% chance that Bynum will sign with the sixers (Hometown, maximum contract, young talents like ET, Holiday). If Bynum is healthy, Sixers should win one championship in the next five or six years. At least it gives Sixers a chance to win.

Kudos to making the move. People are going to start to believe now and that is where it starts. alwaysphil1
Everyone is overlooking the addition of Jason Richardson, who, in my estimation, will be the starting two guard. DC will have his hands full keeping everyone happy, particularly Turner if he comes off the bench and Dorell Wright, normally a starter in the league, starts at the three and also Thad Young, whose minutes might be reduced with Hawes, Allen, and Moultrie at the four. Bearsfriend has noted elsewhere that the Sixers are short on ballhandlers, while I worry about defense at the three. There may be more moves in the offing before January. chuckw- Yes, that athletic defender at the 3 definitely will be on DC's mind...In addition,we've been spoiled by Jrue and ET's durability the past 2 years, and injuries can/may take place,so the ballhandler scheme weighs some (fingers crossed on Wayns)....One other factor, not trying to be negative, but the Sixers have now lost plenty of leadership,in defensive communication, in end of quarter clock management,on chemistry, and in relationships in the locker room and the community ....Definitely "step up" time for a few guys...chuck:my dream scenario would be to garner Royce White, who could be that "point power forward" that few NBA teams possess!...Hoping Omer Asik turns an ankle so Spencer's friendly contract goes there in mid-December!...Last: with Iggy,Faried, and McGee, what's the over/under for Nuggets' dunks on Halloween?...gotta form a "commenter section" for that one.
bearsfriend
Love the trade. Did they give up too much....NO. Iggy was at his peak trade value (all-star and olympics), Vuc at best is an 8th or 9th man on almost any team (8-10 minutes per game) and Harkless is at least 4 to 5 years away. With that logic, and if nothing was done, Harkless MAYBE develops and replaces Iggy, providing more scoring and less defense and the protected draft pick is a best a high teen or low 20 pick. So at the end of the day, it's pretty much a slashing type forward player and a mid first round draft pick for Bynum and JRich who is coming off his worst year, but maybe be more athelitic then Iggy.
Also think the 4 position offers a number of different looks: a.) run the offense thru Hawes at the elbow, b.) Thad for his quickness and offense, c.) and muscle with Brown and the rookie, d.) lock down D with Allen. You basically have 6 players for 2 positions and multiple looks and match-ups.
Last point, Philly writer should be embrassed for the reoporting of this long rumored trade. Known about for at least a week and the best they could do was quotes from other news outlets. leftcoastNV- Good points, and trust us, we've been seeking information on ALL Sixers info ALL Summer...The Sixers have been in covert mode since late May....Regarding the different scenarios with guys paired with Bynum, DC is a matchup freak, and probably will go that route..He does tend to shorten his rotations, which doesn't bode well for a team that prides itself on "individual battles" and "pressure on the ball" defense...Hoping he TRUSTS the depth here, and the team learns to excel, albeit more in the halfcourt it appears, with more spacing on the court.
bearsfriend - Isn't it actually fun to discuss possible "matchup" opportunities..... You touched on a good point about shorten the rotation, I believe after Holiday and Bynum the next 8 players are interchangable related to talent and skills. This maybe one of the deeper teams in the league and can with stand injuries during the season as well as anyone else.
leftcoastNV
Jason Richardson won't start, he'll take over Lou Williams role I'd imagine. I'd like to see Thad get in the starting 5 at the 3 JayOfDaJungle
In general, I like this move. If Collins and friends can motivate and bring the best out of Bynum, then this deal will be more than worth it. I also have come to like Richardson, but he has functioned best where he is playing with good ball distributors(Nash, in particular).
The 76ers HAVE to make a concerted, focused effort in extracting greatness from Bynum, because great centers attract all comers. Philadelphia could AGAIN become a basketball DESTINATION, like it was in the late 70s/early 80s. Maybe I'm nuts, but I would like to think that this trade got Chris Paul's attention; does he REALLY want to play with Melo??? 76erfn
If Last years team almost got to the ECF. We now have some shooters after pounding it inside. J-RICH,NICK YOUNG,Knock down jumpers. EVAN needs to work on his shot, he will be open. It's On. This is the BROAD STREET BYNUMS ERA. GO SIXERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Darryl Cofield
Like your Broad Street Bynums comment. What if we go with BSB for (Broad Street Ballers). leftcoastNV
Great trade. ICDogg
Kool with Broad Street BALLERS. As long as BYNUM And SIXERS BALL. SHOW YA LOVE!!!!!!!!! Darryl Cofield
76erfn: you have hit on a point that should be stressed more; is Holiday the right point guard for this team? Hopefully, given all the scorers the Sixers have added, DC will get him to focus on penetrating and kicking and on getting the ball inside to Bynum while looking less for his shot.
JayOfDaJungle: Richardson is only 31, has been a starter all his career; I think he will be the starting two guard, while Nick Young will be the scorer off the bench, possibly with Dorell Wright if Turner starts at the three. chuckw- Regarding that point chuck, Jrue Holiday (and I'm sure Aaron McKie will be working hard in camp with him) will really be working on his pick and roll game, as Bynum will thrive there...Deeper entry passes as well, as well as lobs...Just in touches alone, Jrue's game will really change/evolve it seems he'll go from combo type last year to a ball dominant player in 2012...Sure sounds like DC LOVES Chris Paul in London, as well as Ginobili.
bearsfriend
Wonderful, let's give up Iggy, our first round pick last year, our first round pick this year, a first round pick in the future for Bynum who will walk after this year. How can you possibly make this trade without coming to an agreement on a contract extension? MoRacker
Please,, this was a STEAL for the Sixers.,,, period.
Please stop whining,,," we gave up too much". Same people that complained when they drafted Harkless are upset that he is gone.
We got a STAR people,, and they don't come cheap. Iggie, Vuke, some kid, and the 18th-20th pick in some draft for a STAR "CENTER". PLEASE stop Whining phillyroni

Hey Zeru let this sink in the sixers got Bynum! You sound like a guy who got a new car complaining about the car dealer. Enjoy this is the new sixers finaly we get a big man instead of trading one away, Wilt, Moses, Brad Dougherty! Come on this is a great day in sixers trade history! male
RE:DRAGON..THE ONLY WAY THE 6ERS COULD GET IN ON THIS DEAL,THEY 'HAD' TO GIVE UP SOMEONE. IGGY TRADE,AND SOME PLAYERS TO GET BYNUM.THE 1ST ROUND PICK? O WELL..IGGY TO DENVER?? O WELL...NOW IF BYNUM COMES IN AND IMPROVES THE MIDDLE,WITH THE PLAYERS AROUND HIM?? WE'VE IMPROVED THAT MUCH MORE.EMBRACE IT FOR A WHILE. t_darb_56
The sixers GOT their guy, but the Flyers didn't. The Phils are in last and the Eagles beat the Steelers. Weird year already sammydelphia
This is a great trade if Bynum stays healthy and he sees this team can win games..other then that the 76ers have had only 2 first round draft picks since 1984 that became studs in the nba (Barkley,,Iverson) so anyone that believes Harkless is going to amount to anything spectacular is sadly mistaken..And as for losing Iggy,Im glad hes finally gone..In my opinion he was nuthing more then a sixth man off the bench,,good defender but lost sooo many games for us either by taking a stupid shot and or by him missing sooo many foul shots,,61% was totally unacceptable,,they probably would have won at least 10 more games last year if the team would have just made their foul shots..How soon you all forget that on many nights this team as a whole only shot maybe 30% from the floor..And what was more disheartning was that they couldnt win on their own floor against teams they beat up on the first couple of months of the season last year..But most of all when they made fantastic defensive plays they failed miserably on the offensive end and if this trade did not happen you would have seen more of the same mediocrity out of the 76ers this year and it would have equated to NO ONE in the seats once again..So dont think for a minute you have a smart managers and coaches here..They had to do this to make money..One thing is for sure,,if healthy this team will put more wins then last year..And thats all that matters... TheRod
@Male.. You are right I am bugging. I like Bynum and glad we have him. But I tend to have buyers remorse. The analogy is head on. I just felt like.. man.. I would have liked to see Harkless play before we gave him up. In my mind we gave up Iggy.. which i dont care and glad.. Vuc.. not too disappointed but i know he is a player.. Harkless.. a guy i never got to see play on the pro level.. and a future first round pick.. another guy i wont get to see.. As a fan and a person that likes to watch the small growths its hard to let go of a guy who is viewed as having loads of potential before we get to see him play. Getting Bynum was a coup no doubt but buyers remorse is in my blood man. Then the fact we dont know if the guy is sturdy. I know he is a beast tho. In the East he will put up crazy numbers. I just feel like if we are giving up first rounders. Vuc.. new year's and the one that Miami has.. maybe we should have held on to what we already had. Zeru
@Bears.. I feel like Denver should have given up McGee since we had to give up All star andre. My thing is did what they contribute to the trade equal out as equity. McGee should be on his way to orlando not our first round picks and Harkless to pay for Dwight Howard. Denver gave up al harrington for Iggy? come on man.. You know Denver got away with something. So did the Lakers. Feels like the Sixers got invited to dinner then had to pay for the main course while everybody else at the table paid for the drinks and appeitizers. Zeru- You are forgetting The Great Satan. By giving up TooManyDala for Harrington, the Sixers got the backroom contract in blood from Satan Stern that Bynum will sign his new contract here. Bynum does not know about this backroom deal, but he will find himself signing here. Harris knows about Stern and his powers: when you deal directly with Satan, you get things done.
§
3 allstars got traded. What all star caliber player did Denver give up? Zeru
Did the sum of what Denver gave up equal a all star player? Half of one? Did they even tip the waiter? Zeru
@Og When are you ever going to have something to say that Anybody other than my self responds to or cares about? Like honestly who are you? Are you my personal troll? My speak and spell hemroid? Jock itch no gold bond? What do you want? Why dont you take the time and write about something intelligent or at least interest peaking that matters so you can get the attention you so desperately covet. But in the meantime while you search for the right words. lol. That should take you all the time in the world.. Zeru
