76ers agree to terms with Collins

POSTED: Thursday, May 20, 2010, 8:08 PM

Is Doug Collins the right hire for the 76ers?
Yes
No

According to an NBA source, the 76ers have agreed to terms with Doug Collins; he will become the team's next head coach. The announcement will come tomorrow and Collins could be introduced as early as Monday.

Although contract amount was not immediately known, one source indicated that the two parties have agreed to a 4-year deal.

Collins, 58, has been the frontrunner since he first interviewed with Sixers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski on May 1. Since then, Stefanski has kept in contact with Collins' camp about every other day, keeping him updated on a coaching search that spanned more than a month and included interviews with seven candidates.

Collins replaces Eddie Jordan, who was fired on April 15, less than 24 hours after finishing his first season with a record of 27-55. The Sixers still owe Jordan $6 million over the next two seasons.

Collins, currently working as an analyst with TNT, has previously coached the Chicago Bulls, Washington Wizards, and Detroit Pistons. He hasn't coached since 2003.

Various NBA sources indicated that Collins could potentially fill out three spots on his staff with Michael Curry (who Collins coached while with Detroit), Brian James (who was on Collins' staffs in Detroit and Washington) and Aaron McKie (who has been on staff with the Sixers under Maurice Cheeks, Tony DiLeo, and Eddie Jordan).

This is quite an off season so far. Coach firing. #2 pick. New coach. More moves to come.

Coaching doesn't set franchises back. I just want to make the playoffs is what set this franchise back. Those 3 seasons that they went to the playoffs to loose in the 1st round killed them. The lottery is how u get back on top not barely making the playoffs. Even if u don't draft using the picks they can be used to sweeten deals to get better NBA player and to get rid of bad contracts. People cannot possibly believe that unless a real Jesus miracle happens and LBJ is in a Sixers uniform that this team will be contending no matter who the coach is. Collins is not a quick fix because there is no quick fix for what the Sixers have become. He is the right choice for right now.

Collins is a stepping stone. He is a X&O coach who is necessary to teach these young players how to play NBA basketball. Larry Brown was the last coach they had who could do that. AI was good enough to make the coaches after Brown semi-tollerable and when AI left Andre Miller pretty much covered up how bad the coaching was because actually the coach on the floor. Least we foget, the Sixers are pretty much in a rebuilding situation and no top tier coach wants to ruin their coaching resume with a bunch of losses. This job was viewed as the worst coaching opportunity league wide so the Sixers might actually be lucky to get even Collins.

4 year deal huh? Imagine if he doesn't work out. Could him, Cheeks, and Jordan all be on the books at once? I'm hoping this one works out this time....

Sam Mitchell was the right choice here. Coach of the Year in '06-'07, but was let go due to philosophical differences with Bryan Colangelo (that whole "discipline and defense" vs. "non-discipline and offense" thing). Collins has had 3 jobs and has never held any of them for more than 3 seasons - what does that say? Another bad choice.

this same personnel(except for andre miller) won 43 game with dileo who had never coached in the nba, jordon won 27 games with the same personnel, who said a coach doesn't matter? collin has taken the 3 teams he has coached and won 10 more games in his first year than the previous coach did. he will win 40-45 games with this team next year. great choice, should have signed him last year.

Holliday, Turner, Young, Brand, ______. Trade Iggy and Dalembert and whatever else for a legit center and please add some depth. Heck yeah, Sixers basketball is coming back!

good move. will be able to teach the young guys, and he will keep their respect better than Jordan. and Tonka, DiLeo was and remains a front office guy...they are not paying him as a coach at all. As for Cheeks, he has been off the books. Get your facts straight before spouting off.

While I liked Collins as a player and as an analyst, can anyone point to any success he has had as a coach?

Somebody has to coach. Hope is for fools in the NBA anyway. If they continue to have a league that has guaranteed contracts AND a salary cap then the product will suffer. Mismanaged franchises not only suffer in the short term, but the decisions leave a blight on the team for years after the fact. Because of the mistakes of previous regimes, teams like the Sixers and the Knicks must go through years of hopelessness just to start from zero.

My expectations is that he and Evan gets us to 500 ball. Some players and the GM have to go for me to have some real expectations.

franchises are usually better historically when doug collins gets fired. If he has a four year deal, sixers will be real contenders in year five. In the meantime, he'll teach the young guys about playing tough. I guess this is good for the long term. OK move.

Bill1966: YOU are the real bigot! You've been making racist statements on these boards for a while. Doug Collins is a great choice. I guarantee Steven A. will not object to this choice because he's "white". "Racist" black men don't get regularly hired in this country, so your claim is bogus. You're insane...

This is why nobody cares about the Sixers. They hire a has been retread. They couldn't find a fresh face looking to build on his resume?

I wiss Collins well, but don't expect much. At this point, you trade Iguadala and draft Cousins. Nobody wants Dalembert or Eldon contract so this will be a long haul as those contracts expire. Might as well go totally young for two years and build the nucleus.

signing Collins was a good move...collins knows the game and can teach the young players the 6ers have on the roster on how to be pros in the NBA...collins will get the 6ers back to playing tough D and running...

Man who couldn't win with Michael jordan is now expected to win with , um, lesser talents? Sets back the franchise another 3 years.

I'm optimistic about Collins. But...I was optimistic when they hired Jordan last year, and look how that turned out. I'm from Philly, so it's hard to be too optimistic about anything.

While this hiring is a positive step in the right direction, the fan faithful still have to remember this team has some bad contracts, poor winning team chemistry and no future direction. A hiring of the best coach in history could not turn this situation around overnight. It will take some time to get this ship going in the right direction, find players willing to buy into a winning system and play hard for each other. A change in the locker room climate is the best we can expect for next year until this team can find players more interested in winning games than making highlight reels on ESPN.

What, was Hubie Brown not available? I guess there were those who thought that Doc Rivers was not a good coach when the Celts hired him. Not sure coaching matters much for a good team (or a bad team). We'll see which the Sixers want to be this year.

So the guy that needed to go so Jordan/Pippen can win titles AND the guy who was a TON less successful than Eddie Jordan, who replaced him at Washington, is now our coach? Round and round our coaching carousal goes... plus, funny how he signs after we get the 2nd pick. Just the template of a sad franchise.

Kate, you continue to do good work. Collins is a perfect choice to develop both Holiday and Turner. I doubt Iggy is going to have his own shooting coach for much longer.
