The Sixers selected Florida forward Marreese Speights with the 16th overall pick in the first round of the NBA draft.

Speights was the sixth forward taken in the draft. He worked out with the Sixers on June 19.

"He can score around the basket with both hands," Sixers assistant GM Tony DiLeo said then. "He can step outside and shoot the jump shot. He's a work in progress, but a talented player."

He averaged 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds last season, his sophomore year, while shooting better than 62 percent from the field.

Think the 76ers might have wanted Thopson instead?

Pat, thanks for starting this deep sixer blog up again. Seems many of the old guys have fallen off. Matter of fact I only checked in about once a week to see if by chance this had picked up again. Hopefully they filter back in. Sacramento don't know what it has yet. He seems like a nice player, but would've been a more mid-late round pick. Not sure who really had the best night. Portland? Maybe Minny got the best deal of the night. For once, Kevin McHale may have the better end of a deal. Not to rant and rave at him again, but thanks to Billy the Kid, we didn't have another pick after the 16th. It was a rather deep draft.
