Sixers release Wayns; Moultrie recalled

POSTED: Sunday, January 6, 2013, 7:31 PM

The 76ers released former Roman Catholic and Villanova star Maalik Wayns on Sunday.

The move coincided with the 76ers recalling rookie forward Arnett Moultrie from their NBA Developmental League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce.  The Sixers roster stands at 13.

Moultrie (6-10, 245) was the 27th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by Miami. He was traded to Philadelphia on draft night in exchange for the draft rights to Justin Hamilton (45th overall pick) and a protected future first round pick.

In seven games during his assignment with the Skyforce, Moultrie averaged 9.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 26.3 minutes per game. He has appeared in 11 games for the Sixers this season.

Wayns was signed as a free agent this summer after impressing the Sixers during the Orlando summer league, and his release is somewhat of a surprise.

DC has no patience. Wayns needs work, but he'll be back in the league at some point.

They need front line help way more than they need a short guard.

Bad move. He was the only true point guard on the team. Holiday is a 2 posing as a 1.

Jrue so far has proven he can be a point but not full time because of his high TO. ET has shown also than he can only run the team in very short spurts or suffer the same as Holiday or worse in the TO category. Wayns could of been the true point if given proper guidance, but DC just showed he rather have a glue guy veteran in Royal with Cheese Ivey. Guess the team will be stuck in a rut as long as DC at the helm since he has absolutely no patience in developing young players.

I'm kinda dissapointed in Moultrie. After watching a couple of his D-league games on youtube, I see why he cant crack the Sixers lineup. He has no motor at all. He seems to have skills but absolutely motivation to use them. He makes Lavoy look like the energizer bunny. I am at the point where I have absolutely no faith in this teams player accessment.

Probably be adding him to the list of young players with potential that the Sixers never gave a chance to that end up doing pretty well somewhere else

Disgusting that they depended on the big men they have for this season. I can almost understand the gamble on Bynum but the others are fairly worthless. Shame about Wayns. Played with heart. I hope he makes it back with another team.

DC is starting to be a joke in evaluating, teaching and having any patience towards rookies. By releasing Wayns, DC just proved he would rather have an old Ivey with no upside on the team. When Wayns is on the court, the offense does better than Ivey. Hopefully Wayns will get picked up by a team (hopefully ORL) that will use his talents properly and play without looking over his shoulder.

They gave Wayns a great audition for other teams. He will definitely be picked up and do well with another team, as so many ex - 76ers do.

The owners need to reel DC in before his starts decimating the team. Having him make personnel decisions is hurting the team. He's a great TV analyst, but starting to looked like a mediocre coach, poor talent evaluator, and incapable in teaching rookies.

Wayns is not an NBA level guard. Period. He's good at times, but without a doubt an NBA pretender

All you guys criticizing Doug Collins for having no patience are missing the point that guys like Wayns rely on agents or family members who suggest that they are ready for the NBA when they are not. The NBA is not a development league and yet guys eager for the cash cut short the college careers that would get them ready and pay the price as Wayns has in this case. Guys that don't dominate at the college level, and Wayns never did, should not come out early expecting long and successful NBA careers. The kids allow themselves to be fooled and it's a pattern that has little to do with the patience of NBA coaches.

You say players that don't dominate the college level do not succeed in the NBA. Then how about Irving, Harden, Lillard, Wade, Rip, Bosh, Billups and many others who never dominated at the collegiate level? Also, take a look at Nik Vucevic, he is starting to develop into a good C/PF that the Sixers desperately need who can rebound and shoot within the interior. He just had another 18 reb game tonight with another 12 and 29 the 2 past previous games.. which Sixer so far had that many rebounds in that span since DC tookover? None.

Claudio:you're spectacular commenting on the Phillies, but this defense of DC in regards to "patience" is purely off bse, as DC is the epitome of "win now, develop later"...With young players who simply need seasoning and are good enough to avoid international waters to do so, the NBDL serves heavily in the development of young players...This time last year,J Lin sewed his oats for the Erie BayHawks, and weeks later, "Linsanity" arrived..This season, Melo,Lamb,Cunningham,Montieljunas,T Jones, etc have thrived with the minutes...to hine their games as well as maintain fitness levels...Wayns showed his game in exhibitions, before crashing his head hard vs the Knicks in the last game of pre-season..Once the season started,DC's rotations got tight, even with the soft early season schedule...as it has wih Speights,Vucevic,S Young, etc (i.e young guy or newbie who has not gained the "trust")...Last season, it was lack of "practice"..That excuse doesn't fly anymore)

Fact of the matter beyond DC's lack of trust of Wayns to run the halfcourt offese or apply enough pressure on the ball to quell DC's thirst, Maalik's contract would havebeen guaranteed if he was on the roster after January 10th...He could be a potential 10 day contract type guy for the Sixers, unless they simply go in a another direction...Sad thing though is that DC actually thought his "mentoring" would develop Wayns better than playing 30 mpg in Sioux City, where even Gratz/Temple alum Mark Tyndale is playing solidly, and former Laker Andre Goudelock is firing away...Wayns needs to tighten up his perimeter shot (it never fell like pre-season,when he was over 40% from three), and learn the nuances of reading screens and filter more "pass first" into his game...Interesting that Moultrie, who HAS lacked motor (true to his critics' opines in the evaluation process) comes back up despite not yet breaking out in a league (NBDL) designed to do so...Bottom line for now, a slow team just got slower.
