ESPN's Bayless: Sixers suckers in Bynum trade

POSTED: Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 6:24 PM

According to Skip Bayless of ESPN, there’s really no reason for the 76ers to await anxiously the results of Andrew Bynum’s Dec. 20 checkup.

Bayless, one of the hosts on ESPN’s “First Take,” said on Tuesday’s show that the Sixers were the suckers in the four-team trade that landed Dwight Howard with the foundering Los Angeles Lakers.

“I spoke the other day to a very reliable Sixers source -  I spoke to somebody I trust - who told me and confirmed to me Andrew Bynum’s knees are shot,” Bayless said.  “We’re talking about beyond repair, progressive arthritis, deep degeneration, unfixable.

“The source said that he will try to play,” Bayless continued. “He might even occasionally over the next year or two have a decent game here and there. But long-term this will get only worse – only worse.  So bottom line, the Sixers got taken in this trade that ultimately landed Dwight Howard in Los Angeles.”

Bynum on Monday said that his right knee, site of the first bone bruise,  feels fine, adding that it is the left knee, the one he hurt while bowling, that is causing him pain.

“There is nothing I can really do about it; it’s arthritis in the knees,” Bynum said. “The cartilage is missing so that’s not something that’s going to re-grow itself.  Maybe in the future, next three to five years there may be something out there that really does help. For right now it’s kind of just a waiting game.”

It smells like the Sixers consulted Howie Roseman on the deal, what a deal! If Bynum injured his arthritic knees bowling, how in hell will they hold up under the pounding of a 7 footer playing NBA hoops. Plus the comment from a former teammate in LA was both humorous and probably dead on, 'I don't know how much Andrew Bynum likes to bowl, but I have never met an NBA player that hates playing basketball more than he does'. That's all you really need to know about how his future will play out - one big contract and a lot of missed games.

I dont know what everyones complaining about we got rid of iggy's big salary for one who was always really streaky and never was the superstar he was supposed to be like the real A.I. second even if bynums done he only has one year left plus not everyone remember we also got J Rich who is a great player who brings leadership and energy with these young guys and there playing very well

The Bynum trade was genius: They dumped Iggy. and Byrum wil get cut at season's end. More cash avaialble to wheel and deal. the Sixers are already a better team with out Iggy. That wa the point of the trade. They Sixers, Lakers, and the rest of the NBA already knewsBynum's knees are shot. They dumped Iggy.

It was a shot worth taking. He was a guy who could have transformed the Sixers into a championship contender....still might. Plus they dumped major salary for use next year if this doesn't work out...there is no monetary commitment to Bynum beyond this year. So not a dumb as it looks.

I have lived with degenerative arthritis in my knees since my thirties and I was told that the only "cure" is knee replacement. Unfortunately, jumping is the biggest no-no with metal knees and running is a second one. As long as you sit on the bench your new knees will last the rest of your life. Of couse, that depends on whether your size is commensurate with the four sizes of replacement knees they make! A fraction of an inch off and you will wish for your old achy knees back! If Bynum has degenerative arthritis in both knees, he will have bad days and worse days but never a completely good day. Write it off to a win in that the team got rid of Iguodala and Brand. Iggy wore out his welcome and has been a diminihsed scorer each of the last several years. Brand was a warrior with nothing left in the tank. Each of them is having a season this year that would have turned the decent Sixers into the lousy Suxers!

everyone forgets that we gave up a first round pick as well as Iggy. this isn't simply a loss of Iggy's trade value. this is also the loss of our first round pick. someone should be fired for this

At the end of last year the sixers had the worst record of the four teams involved in the trade and with a team that was at its high point. Currently the sixers have the best record of the four, improving and at the end of the year will have money to spend. Sometimes it isn't what you add but what you subtract.

Yeah, the Lakers fleeced the sixers - how the trade working out for LA? And keep in mind folks, the number one objective for this move was to create cap space beyond this season, and to hand over leadership of the team to a young core including turner, holiday, and young. Igoudala was holding back the development of all 3 of those players, so with his departure they can now flourish. If bynum comes back and plays, great - bonus, but I belive the team was well aware of his knee condition.

This trade is a farce. I just hate helping those Lakers. I can't believe there was no trade clause!
