ESPN's Bayless: Sixers suckers in Bynum trade

POSTED: Tuesday, December 11, 2012, 6:24 PM

According to Skip Bayless of ESPN, there’s really no reason for the 76ers to await anxiously the results of Andrew Bynum’s Dec. 20 checkup.

Bayless, one of the hosts on ESPN’s “First Take,” said on Tuesday’s show that the Sixers were the suckers in the four-team trade that landed Dwight Howard with the foundering Los Angeles Lakers.

“I spoke the other day to a very reliable Sixers source -  I spoke to somebody I trust - who told me and confirmed to me Andrew Bynum’s knees are shot,” Bayless said.  “We’re talking about beyond repair, progressive arthritis, deep degeneration, unfixable.

“The source said that he will try to play,” Bayless continued. “He might even occasionally over the next year or two have a decent game here and there. But long-term this will get only worse – only worse.  So bottom line, the Sixers got taken in this trade that ultimately landed Dwight Howard in Los Angeles.”

Bynum on Monday said that his right knee, site of the first bone bruise,  feels fine, adding that it is the left knee, the one he hurt while bowling, that is causing him pain.

“There is nothing I can really do about it; it’s arthritis in the knees,” Bynum said. “The cartilage is missing so that’s not something that’s going to re-grow itself.  Maybe in the future, next three to five years there may be something out there that really does help. For right now it’s kind of just a waiting game.”

What's even funnier is this....Tony Dileo was "promoted" to GM in large part due to his involvement in this deal. He was praised for bringing Bynum here. LMFAO.

It's no secret that Bynum couldn't play consistently well with the Lakers, whether it was his knees or attitude. No question from day one that the Sixers got taken.

Sixers took a calculated risk based on the fact that Bynum played 60 games last season at a high level WITH bad knees, not to sell tickets fraudulently. How does Bayless reconcile Bynum's performance last year? Did his knees suddenly become unplayable in the offseason? Highly unlikely that a degenerative knee condition radically changed in less than a year.

We knew this the day he was traded.

Why is this a surprise now. Seriously.

I'm not a Sixers fan and I don't care either way, but Bayless is just incorrect. The Sixers got rid of a massive contract for a player in Igoudala that they didn't need / want (and the feeling was mutual). This allows them to remain competitive next year in the free agency market while simultaneously developing the actual back court that they want the team to build around for the next few years in Jrue and Turner. Oh and we got Jason Richardson, who is a perfectly solid (albeit old) player. So even if there was a tiny chance that Bynum could play some this season (and there still is), this trade is absurdly good. Like maybe there's a 10% chance he can play effectively in the playoffs, in which case the Sixers would immediately become the best team in the East not called Miami. If not, oh well, the team is still good and set to make a huge move in the offseason next year.

There is No long term investment, and NO ONE expected much of anything in return for brickadala. Bynum was gravy. These owners will stop at nothing to win, believe that. The key guys are all self made men, who have made a career of buying low and creating immense value thereafter. They get it. They will make moves that will have us forgetting about Bynum. Most importantly, the sixers have 3 budding stars, growing up in front of us. Free agents will/should/do want to come to Philly. And btw, The lakers won't win with Howard, so it's net net anyway. Buck up there fellow negadelphs, enjoy the ride!

My only hope is the the Sixer brass made sure they had insurance for the $16 million faux paux. What a joke, if they actually had a physical and medical report. I guess its the same team physician who put the OK on the Malone for Ruland deal. We almost look like Portland when it comes to big men trades/drafts? Ruland and now Bynum. Hey, I'll play center for 1/2 that and actually suit up for a few games. How bout saving $8 million?

Prediction: when Bynum's $ is no longer guaranteed he'll make a miraculous recovery like everyone else does in the NBA (ie Grant Hill)

I hereby baptize thee, Andrew Bynum, as Mr. Dead Weight, who forever more shall reside on the Sixers bench during all home games, and who, with the help of no one, will thoroughly enjoy your bi-monthly trips to the bank to cash thy check.
