Sixers Can't Run On Empty Against Pistons

The 76ers will be distributing 20,000 t-shirts for fans at tonight's Game 3 with the Detroit Pistons that say "Run with us." Now the question is whether the Detroit Pistons will allow the runnning to occur?

The Pistons ability to shut down the Sixers transition game was one of the reasons they won so handily on Wednesday, 105-88. The Sixers had just one fastbreak point in the first half, when they trailed by 17 points.

The Sixers were forcing one shot after another and never got into an offensive rhythm.

Coach Maurice Cheeks has emphasized the importance of getting easy baskets in transition. Yet Detroit rarely allows easy baskets. In the opening 90-86 win, the Sixers earned 16 fastbreak points. For a Pistons team that allowed 9.6 fastbreak points per game during the regular season, that was good production for the Sixers.

Without those easy baskets, Andre Iguodala has been struggling, relying too much on his jumper. He has had to shoot the jumper over the long-armed Tayshaun Prince and the results haven't been pleasant. Iguodala is shooting 5 for 24 and he remains the key in this series. Yes, the Pistons did a good job of slowing down Andre Miller with a variety of traps in Game 2, but the biggest key is for Iguodala to get untracked on offense.

Now the Sixers have to adjust, which means Iguodala could be handling the ball more in the open court. And if he could get a few easy baskets early in transition, that would give the Sixers some needed momentum.

Cheeks preached before the postseason that it would be more difficult to get in the running game in the playoffs, but he said the Sixers wouldn't be backing off.

So the Sixers will continue to try to run because the option of attempting to win while primarily executing their half-court offense, isn't the best way to go about beating the Pistons.

marc, I don!t think Mo can go in to this game expecting to fast break much for 2 reasons;1] they don!t turn the ball over; 2] they will purposely slow the tempo. He has to go into the game with a defensive mindset, that!s why the taller lineup should gradually, I!d start it, be turned to. Iggy on Rip and Thad on Prince will help on the boards and on their postups. I expect A.Miller to come out looking to score along with Thad. Saunders commented after game 2 that he wanted to put pressure on A.Mill. and Iggy so they couldn!t play as many minutes as game #1, we should do the same to Chauncey and Taysun.

Would like to see Sam get some high post passes and recieve at the foul line and shoot. He is a reliable shooter from there and Wallace or Mcdyess has to be forced to defend. By the way, with Sam at the foul line and Thad and Reggie at the 3 and 4, they will get oppurtunities to get offensive rebounds if the Det. bigs have to cover Sam.

Marc: are you going to be able to do anything about this crummy format? Moving onto games 3 and 4, I will be disapointed if we do not win 1 of the 2. I do not expect to win this series, but I do want to win at least 2 games. Look at how Washington tuned the tables on the Cavs back at home. That's encouraging. Some people were discussing Jason Smith and Rodney Carney in the last thread, and I'd like to voice my opinion that they should be getting minutes like they did in the regular season. For what it's worth, Jason Smith is +12 in the 2 games, so he must be doing something positive. At the least he is a big body to take some fouls. Carney demonstrated what he can bring with the hurting he put on Rip Hamilton in a few minutes - strip and dunk, 3 ball in the face. He has the size and athleticism to guard both Hamilton and Prince.

Suede: only if Sammy is wide open can he hit that shot.

What happened to Marc. I think someone took over his blog and starting posting at 3:47 in the morn. AI is not worth the max!

Morty, I was one of the smith mentioners yesterday, and also agree about Carney. I think really the bottom line is you just have to keep riding the horses that got you here. Not saying they need extended time, but they do need time. Seemed almost like Mo reverted to beginning of the season rotations last night, not really mixing things up until it was beyond too late.

Sixerzguy, i was reading some of the comments from yesterday afternoon, and i absolutely agree that a major key is getting detroit in foul trouble early. That was a huge boost to us in game one that Chauncey in particular had to sit before the 1st quarter was even over. If mo doesn't change the lineup I'll be disappointed, but i'll be able to understand the logic of not messing with things this late in the year. BUT, there's just no excuse for us to come out shooting jump shots. Getting the line needs to be a priority.

KM: Right, I'm also not calling for extended minutes necessarily, just however he played them during the regular season - it seemed to work well enough. And it still kills me that he sticks with Green when it is obvious he is not hitting shots. Unlike other players, Green does not contribute enough in other areas of the game if he does not hit his FG's to justify the consistent minutes. Ahh, but I'm beating a dead horse there.

I grateful that Brown quit the Sixers. My worst nightmare was having him as a coach again, partly because he never was willing to play the young players. I just find him overbearing. NewPar: I am going to game tonight and remain hopeful, but expect more-of-the-same from Iggy and Sam. They can be shutdown in playoffs just like Korver was in the past -- albeit KK is contributing a little this year with Utah. Mo needs to keep Sam in the paint on defense, and hope for some blocks and more rebounds. Don't expect too much else from him. Law of Averages suggests that Iggy should have a good game soon.

i have never seen such a rancid display of offense. this team needs some serious pieces to be a contender. Iggy is a false prophet. to build a championship-caliber team, tough decisions need to be made. i think we need to seriously consider whether or not to keep Iggy. Bluntly speaking, this guy is not good enough to be the man. If we max him out, we should expect to continue to wallow in mediocrity.

Morty, Good call on Carney. I have been harping on playing him against Rip all series. His length and athletic ability are what the Sixers need, especially tonight in front of that electric crowd. I would call for a few lobs early in the game to Iggy,(to get him going) and to Carney so the crowd stays in it early. Iggy has to drive the ball instead of shooting these World Be Free fade away rainbows. Jason- Los Angeles

Instead of relying completely on easy buckets in transition the Sixers need to work on finding easy shots in the half court. You aren't going to beat the Pistons defense with dribble drives. Sixers need to work on their ball movement to set up the best possible shots. Also let Iguodala create more rather than find his own offense.

McKie - you are right. I do think giving him a healthy contract is ok, but not a max deal - I am more concerned with the years than the $$ per. Suede - good first post - terrible second post. You want to see Sammy taking 15 footers? Are you serious? As for tonight, it is time for Mo to start giving some major minutes to Lou. He presents a mismatch for Billups and Hamilton with his speed. As Ed said, they are playing with the house's money. Sit Green - start Miller and Lou in the back. Miller Lou Iggy Thad Sam All of these guys can get to the rim (except Sammy). Lou can stay with Rip. Miller did a nice job with Billups in game 1. Mo has to play to his strengths. Roll the dice and see what happens.

Good points. The Sixers are just too small with their current line-up. Prince completely shut Iguodala down in game 2. If we move Iguodala to SG, with Thad and Evans at forward, with Smith and Carney off the bench, that creates match-up problems for the Pistons, if they try to keep Prince on Iguodala. That, and Iggy... please, try to get to the rim. 1 for 9 from the field and 2 for 2 from the line??? You're taking too many jumpers and not getting to the foul-line. We win either of the next two games and we're still in this.

Sammy Is a bird brain who loves ripping boards and then passing it either out of bounds or to the other team. Willie G needs to go, sopranos style. Mckie- your right about Iggy's worth, of lack of. Trade him before ever giving him a huge contract. Sick of his whining and his "skata" faces. Please no lectures from anyone about skata this time. He is an excellent SF, but it's really stretching it to play him at the 2. Especially when your PG is andre miller who doesn't stretch the field himself. Iggy coud get away with the SG spot if he was playing with a baron davis type, even still it wouldnt be ideal. Trade the dude in the summer along with willie g and get a stud PF if possible.
