ESPN: Bynum's latest bruise from bowling

POSTED: Sunday, November 18, 2012, 12:28 AM

Did 76ers center Andrew Bynum cause further damage - including a new bone bruise and cartilage damage – to his knees while bowling?

According to a report on ESPN.com, this might be the case. Citing multiple sources, ESPN.com reported that Bynum, who has yet to play for the Sixers, may have caused himself further damage while bowling.

There are several activities that are prohibited in standard NBA player contracts, but bowling is not one of them. Bynum is known to enjoy bowling, ESPN.com reported.

On Friday, Bynum reported that he experienced a setback in his recovery. Already hampered by a bruised bone in his right knee, Bynum said that he has also suffered a similar injury in his left knee. Bynum is scheduled to begin basketball related activities in early Dec.

Wow.This really makes you wonder what this guy's commitment is to playing thisyear. He's getting paid no matter what and is a free agent after this season. What is his motivation to come back any time soon? All he needs to do is come back and show something in the last month to show he's healed for potential new teams. To be a part of a huge trade for this franchise and then to be out with a knee injury and then to bowl on that injured knee? Wow. Maybe he is the dog everyone in LA said he was.

Certainly seems at best to be questionable judgment to bowl when he can't do the job he is well-paid for. But unless I'm mistaken, the Sixers can give him a better contract than any other team in this situation, which would seem to suggest he has plenty of motivation to get on the court Unless he hates the east coast or something. Whatever he is, he's going to get paid one way or another.

Living in LA but still having my heart in Philly, this does NOT surprise me at all. I know the Sixers wanted to dump IA, but Bynum has never been committed to anything but himself. He was drafted at 17 and has been a pampered and spoiled throughout his career. His knees have been a problem the past 3+ seasons as has his attitude. He was busted parking in handicapped spots, he was tossed out of his last playoff game, he chose to shoot 3's even when the coach questioned his responses. In the end, Bynum is all about Bynum, not the team concept. He has made his money and will continue to make money as some team will offer him a multi-year deal next year based on his "potential". Philly is paying him $16 million this year and won't see him in uniform until at least the end of January.

Good idea to invest 4 past and future 1st rounders on this stooge. I understand the team was looking for cap relief from Iggy, but this is absurd. No wonder this team simply treads water year after year.

Actually someone on these boards a few weeks ago noted that AB bowls in Manayunk and jokingly indirectly hinted there could be a problem. I really doubt he hurt himself bowling, or at least I hope he can at least bowl (almost like walking IMO) without suffering catastrophic knee damage. Most 70 year olds can. If a 25 year old cannot then search on the UFA rolls needs to privately begin NOW!

I do think the cartiledge issue is because of the platelet therapy. The other is the Sixers longstanding tradition of being enamored with guys who have a history of injury - Ruland, Webber, Brand, Hinson, Bynum.......all in effort to man the post. Living in Florida I get to watch Magic games and have enjoyed seeing Vucevic be a 12-10 guy - certainly something we could have used in the form of an un-injured 21 year old.

I have no clue how one can bruise a bone in the knee by bowling. But he did, all the while supposedly rehabbing his other bone-bruised knee. With that out of the way there are issues here besides this bone bruised player. One is that the team did not or could not have properly medically evaluated this player before joining that trade dance. Could be they saw visions of an elite center in their uniform and lost all control and common sense of their own history going back to the Ruland fiasco. The second thing is that this team does a poor job developing players. Here, they spend time in some kind of figurative coaches doghouse. It's only when they are traded for the next big thing do we learn how that traded player is blossoming into a fine, young NBA player on the rise. Only here can we take the 2nd highest rated college basketball player in the draft and watch the player become an enigma before our eyes.

Under Pat Williams, Jack McMahon and Billy Cunningham, this team drafted real players with polish and skill. They traded for need; look what the great Bobby Jones brought to that team. Williams was shrewd enough to steal a first round draft picks using his little used bench guys (Terry Catledge). Now, flash forward to 2012 and we have a team that spends more time determining who the next mascot is going to roam the seating areas rather then in proper player development. This team has a sorry history of spending big on washed up NBA players and it's deja vu and Ground Hog Day all over again! I kind of wonder if the ownership and front office all have a collective brain bruise!

Gee Bynum's hurt AGAIN! Is it the curse of Philadelphia sports teams that they can't draft, can't evaluate talent and make bad free agent signings or is it that we just have BAD MANAGEMENT? It seems to be true for the 76ers and the Eagles as we know.

Speaking as someone who used to bowl but stopped because of knee problems and the pressure it would put on them when flexed, all I can say is...are you kidding me? And how he is going to play basketball under these circumstances? The new DX of cartilage being weakened--well, there are new experimental treatments, but generally speaking conventional wisdom is that cartilage damage can only get worse, not better. the body doesn't regrow cartilage. If anything will cause cartilage tears--it's a basketball season. I don't care how talented this guy is. Anyone who gives him a max contract is out of their minds. He has Bill Walton and Jeff Ruland written all over him. If his knees are this bad at his age, they will only get worse as a basketball player.

Sixers brass are morons if they don'trealize they will NEVER sign him to an extension. Why did he go to his own doctor for this "new" diagnosis???

Wow: not much love for a 7:0 foot bowler trying to convert that 7-10 split. This has been one of the most bizarre episodes in Philly sports history, with a befuddled, deceptive front office, a seemingly clueless coach running the show, and a new ownership group who is learning that making millions from buying up distressed companies, stripping them of assets and flipping them is much easier than turning a mid-level NBA team into a championship team. Back to the drawing board, I fear.

Climbing Mt Everest in your undies is easier than turning a mid-level NBA team into a chamionship. What makes this even more bizarre is that every important development was broken by the national media.

Imagine having the money to eat not 1, but 2 "stiff" contracts. First the 18 mil they paid Brand to go away and now this 16 mil for Bynum. This ownership group has made thier money in hedge funds and leveraged buyouts and are experts in obtaining "troubled assets". Can't wait to see how it all plays out.

The guy can not look the reporters in the eye when he talks. To me that is a usual sign of deception. I have no idea what is going on here, but this has all been handled terribly. It looks like the team is finally fed up asking Bynum to address the media on his own on Friday. Even DiLeo seemed to be smirking while speaking to the media after Andrew. What can you do but laugh. Adam Aron is a carnival barker and we all bught in. From the large crowd who greeted Andrew at the Constitution Center to the thousands of fans who bought tickets believing that somehow Andrew would be on the court for opening night. Many still believed even though the player had seen no on court practice and couldn't even run that somehow he would be back for opening night with only one week of practice! The best thing out of all of this is Dileo's response that we are in it with Andrew for the long hall and want do what is best for his future. In the interim the articles are starting to run about how great Kwame Brown is and how he will help the team. The spin continues.

This is flawed thinking. They'll be under the cap but will not have 3 of their top 8 players under contract. With Bynum, Nick Young and Dorell Wright coming off the books it frees up salary cap $ but your $20M figure isn't enough to bring in 3 good players. If Bynum doesn't work out we'll be in for years of middle of the road teams.
