War of words between Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Bill Maher

The edgy comedian gets read the riot act on ‘The View’

Bill Maher was out on the New York TV promotion circuit yesterday plugging his book, The New New Rules. But he got a very different reception on morning and late night talk shows.

First up was The View where Elisabeth Hasselbeck was waiting to take his head off. Here's how the fight went

By way of background, on his HBO show in February of this year, Maher delivered this joke about CBS correspondent Lara Logan who had been sexually assaulted in Cairo during the Egyptian uprising: "New rule. . Now that Hosni Mubarak has released Lara Logan, he must put her intrepid hotness on a plane immediately. In exchange, we will send Elisabeth Hasselbeck."

Hasselbeck who somehow parlayed a season on Survivor into a career, obviously took serious umbrage. She told Maher that as a show biz professional she works with comedians all the time and she's something of an expert on funny. And his comment was not funny.

The only problem is that when she read the line, the audience started laughing

Last night Maher turned up on Late Night and David Letterman wanted to know about the tussle on The View. Check it out.

The only constant in both appearances: Maher managed to work in references to Penn State.
