‘Walking Dead’ opens huge

Last night’s season opener draws 7.3 million viewers

The zombies came storming back strong last night as Walking Dead opened its second season with 7.3 million viewers last night. AMC termed that "the strongest telecast for any drama in basic cable history."

That's carefully worded. Sports, reality shows and movies have all pulled in more eyeballs to ad-supported cable, But Walking Dead is off to a very impressive start any way you slice it.

And slice it they did. The 90-minute episode contained perhaps the most gruesome scene to date in what has been a very gory series. Rick and Daryl disembowel a dead zombie to make sure it has not consumed the missing Sophia.

On the plus side, we got to see what Southern Baptist zombies look like in their Sunday go-to-meeting clothes.

In case you missed it, here's a big bite of last night's episode.

Here's the aspect of last night's showing that is blowing away everyone in the TV biz. Of those 7.3 million viewers, far more than half (4.8 million, to be precise) fell within the coveted 18-49 age bracketed. That, my friends, is a ratings grand slam.

Dr. Peppers for all my undead friends.
