VIDEO Stephen Colbert shoots for a (much) younger demographic

With the morning shows all aiming for younger viewers, Colbert takes it a baby step further

It's a trend alright. The morning shows are playing up social media. First NBC's Today unveiled Carson Daly in its high-tech Orange Room, treating us to a fast-moving web-feast every morning.

Now ABC's Good Morning America has answered back with its Social Square, which it describes as a "social media nerve center". On Thursday's Colbert Report, host Stephen Colbert showed a clip of GMA's new cutting edge studio being introduced by Lara Spencer, whom Colbert referred to as "that talking glow stick".

The strategy is clearly to draw in younger, hipper viewers, a vast audience who were just looking for a reason to watch network television at 7 a.m.

Well, Colbert beat them at their own game, introducing his Playdate Plaza. As you'll see, now pre-schoolers have a reason besides colic to stay up late.
