Can he do it again? Slammin’ Simon Cowell built a British singing concept into the top-rated show on television: American Idol.

He’s hoping for another successful transplant next week when he launches The X Factor, originally a British talent search, on the Fox network. It’s a two-night rollout beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m.

Want to get an advance look at what Cowell’s offering? See video below.

Judging by the auditions seen here, it’s a lot like Idol, although the talent seems more diverse, less cookie-cutter (and maybe not as good). It’s a fun clip. You get some “Call security!” moments, a cute kid, some sob stories and a whole lot of people who have no place on a stage. Yes, that includes you, the guy who drops trou.

Cowell seems to dominate the proceedings. He’s joined by his old stumbling partner Paula Abdul as well as L.A. Reid and Nicole Scherzinger. Love the sequence where you see them walking away from their jet in slow motion like they’re the heroes in an action movie.

This promo may be guilty of overkill (set to the grandiose music of Carl Orff’s “O Fortuna”? Really?). We’ll have to wait until next week to see if The X Factor is all that.
