Seth MacFarlane to host Oscars

A thoughtful MacFarlane ponders his future

Is Seth MacFarlane a good choice to host the Oscars?
Yes: Anyone's better than Anne Hathaway and James Franco
No: I don't get his sense of humor
Undecided

And now for something completely unexpected: ABC has announced that Seth MacFalane will host The 85th Annual Academy Awards telecast live on Sunday February 24.

Sure, put the famously crude animator and funnyman in charge of a 3-hour + live broadcast in a room full of the celebrities that he is known for skewering. What could possibly go wrong?

Said MacFarlane,”It's truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars. My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen roast.”

You may be thinking: what does the creator of (and primary voice talent behind) Family Guy have to do with Hollywood? Well, you’re forgetting Ted, his summer comedy that teamed Mark Wahlberg with a horny talking teddy bear.

So his qualifications are practically equivalent to those of David Niven.

This should be….um, interesting?

There is a chance MacFarlane's approach may be a tad irreverent. Here's a clip of Peter recalling his own Oscar experience -- ballot stuffing.

Why are you surprised that they would hire a left wing shill to host a major media event? The celebrities who were skewered will lap up anything he says, so long as he makes fun of Palin's special needs son.

I hate his politics, but the guy is a genius. I'm so old I remember when every Family Guy episode involved humor all he way through. Now, 75% hate filled political rants... 10% Funny... haven't figured the rest out.

sillybilly. Absolutely. To be sure, I've probably seen every episode. But the only reason he gets away with the racist "jokes" is because he is an outspoken liberal, who supplicates himself -- in public, of course -- to Bill Maher. This way, if someone says they're offended, he can counter that he was being "ironic". If anyone else made the same jokes, without being an outspoken liberal, they would be blackballed. It would certainly be pointed out that the man who provides the voice of Mort -- an offensively stereotypical Jewish caricature -- is not Jewish and the man who voices Cleveland Brown -- a sometimes stereotypical African-American caricature -- is white. Neither a conservative, nor an independent, nor even a quiet liberal (oxymoron?) would get away with that stuff.
