When HBO talks about all-access for its NFL training camp series, Hard Knocks, they really mean it. On last night’s show, they had fly-on-the-wall footage of Chad Johnson (the player formerly known as Ochocinco) being released from the Miami Dolphins in an uncomfortable session with the team’s new head coach Joe Philbin. Check it out:
That’s quick editing, since Johnson’s release took place on Monday. The episode also contained ample footage from the Dolphins’ first preseason game, a loss to one of their interstate rivals, the Tampa Bay Bucs.
Johnson’s dismissal followed hard on the heels of his arrest over the weekend on domestic battery charges, after an altercation in which he allegedly head-butted his summer bride, Evelyn Lozada, who filed for divorce yesterday.
The Dolphins’ coach explains Johnson’s firing by saying, “His temperament isn’t good for us”, citing some bad taste tweeting by the always controversial veteran , a profane press conference and this latest troubling incident. At least a few players in the lockerroom by the way have expressed disappointment that the team didn’t make more of an effort to stand behind Johnson.
Earlier in the episode, Philbin explains that his wife has flown up to Philadelphia to attend the funeral for Garret Reid in support of his mother Tammy. Last January, when Philbin was the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, the family lost their 21-year-old son, Michael, when he fell in a freezing river in Wisconsin after drinking and smoking pot.
