Regis Plays Cupid for 'DWTS' Carrie Ann Inaba

"Dancing with the Stars'’ judge Carrie Ann Inaba gets engaged on live TV, with Regis Philbin setting the romantic mood.

The lame duck host of 'Live with Regis and Kelly' still has a few tricks up his wing.

This morning Regis Philbin roped guest host and ballroom expert Carrie Ann Inaba into doing a Miss Lonelyhearts segment, during which Regis gave advice to a 'viewer' who had written in wondering how to propose to his girlfriend.

Regis started with the basics: dim the lights (the studio darkened), put on some romantic music (out came the violins) until the only ingredient missing was the ring.

Out walked Inaba's boyfriend Jesse Sloan. He got down on one knee, showed her the diamond and asked if she would marry him (see video below).

All of this with Regis literally looming over her shoulder like a turkey buzzard. Even that didn't break the mood as a weepy Inaba accepted.

Later the show's guests, Jake Gyllenhaal and Howie Mandel (plug away, boys!) toasted the happy couple with some bubbly.

As TV's most seasoned warhorse, shouldn't Regis have the power invested in him to conduct the wedding on air?

Eat your heart out, Tiny Tim.

What do you think? Was Carrie Ann caught by surprise?
