Letterman mocks death threat

On his first night on the air since a Muslim extremist called for his death, David Letterman pokes fun at the situation

Last week a Muslim extremist called for a fatwa on Late Night host David Letterman online, agitating for some true believer to – yikes! – cut Dave's tongue out.

Last night Letterman had his first show since the threat. And found nothing but humor in the situation. He opened his monologue by thanking the audience in the Ed Sullivan Theater.

"We have great audiences night in and night out," he said, " but tonight especially, it means a lot to me. Tonight, you people are more, to me, honestly, more than an audience … you're more like a human shield."

He followed that a few minutes later with this gag: "I have a fatwa on me. They say the guy that issued the fatwa is an Internet jihadist. An Internet jihadist, and I said, 'Heck, who says Obama isn't creating jobs?' "

That was followed by Letterman's nightly tradition, tailored to the looming menace: Top Ten Thoughts That Went Through My Head After Hearing About the Threat (see video below).

Don't want to give away the punchlines but in our opinion #4 is particularly inspired.

You're killing us, Dave.
